Advantages: speed, comfort, efficient
Disadvantages: dirty, expensive, violence
I am often surprised at the levels of violence and vandalism on trains. As a frequent traveller on the Luton to worthing route, I have had no problems in luton, a hard town but have witnessed vandalism and violence in worthing and brighton, both are rather more middle class than luton. On one occasion around 5pm at brighton station I was attacked by three individuals with a beer bottle and a pint glass, at one point in the fracas I was strangled by one as i restrained the other and the third was trying to smash the bottle on my head. The whole thing lasted about ten minutes before the thugs ran off. There is less of this kind of thing at Luton train station because the staff are ready to deal with it, they do not tolerate any nonsense, remember this is the station that gave Cheri Blair a penalty fare. All rail staff should be trained to deal with this sort of thing or pacifists like me will be forced to raise our fists. Suppose you are on a train with your child and you face thugs, with no chance of police intervention you have the choice of being a victim or defending yourself, if you are out numbered and small like me, your only option is extreme violence. Unfortunately violence on trains can not exclusively be resolved by the rail operators, it is a symptom of a society that has become increasingly violent. we need to teach our children, spouses, brothers and sisters that we are civilised beings and should spend our energies in more positive pursuits. What ever happened to that old saying ‘Love thy neighbour’

- 20/05/01 Good first op. Welcome to the asylum.
Unfortun ately, society today's attitude more often is "Stuff thy Neighbours - (before they stuff you)" |

- 20/05/01 unfortunately thats the way things are now... it's not safe, and even if rail staff were trained, they are never around when you need them anyway! |

- 20/05/01 Your experiences sadly sound only too familiar. Good op |
