Advantages: Convenience, Clear site, Good service

Disadvantages: No open tickets for outward journeys

There are several websites where you can book train tickets in advance, but one excels. This is www.qjump.com
The site is very attractive to look at, straightforward, fast, and virtually idiot-proof. As you go through the booking process, various checks are carried out which make mistakes very unlikely. You key in your date of travel, the stations of departure and arrival, and the approximate times you require. Unfortunately you can't buy an open ticket for departure, but on a return ticket the return journey can be left open.
On some trains you are able to reserve a seat at no cost, elect for smoking or non-smoking, select which way you wish to face. You can even choose to avoid certain stations if you wish to, though of course avoiding large cities may add to the length of the journey and involve extra changes. If you travel via London, the site tells you how long to allow for the Tube journey. (The cost of this is not included). Before you pay, full details of the journey are shown, with all timings and any changes clearly displayed. You can then choose whether to collect the ticket at the station or have it posted to you, with no charge. I have mine posted, and they have been sent by return, neatly enclosed in a travel folder. Your credit card payment is, of course, security protected.
I've used this site several times, and am very impressed by its clarity and efficiency. I've also tried, just once, to get the same sort of information from my nearest large railway station : an experience I shan't repeat unless I fancy a nervous breakdown.

It's definitely much better than thetrainline.com isn't it? It's also quite hand for checking timetables on even if you're not travelling. One point, though: several train companies are phasing out the choice of facing/back to travel, as many journeys (eg those that pass through Gloucester) involve the train reversing en route, so the choice is meaningless. (Of course, if people stopped whinging about going backwards - which is actually safer - we wouldn't have this problem in the first place!)

lookarou ndcafe2: I think that's a *little* excessive! And also rather offensive, frankly - I hate the corner-cutting subcontracting culture with a passion, but comparing it with a terrorist who deliberately goes out to murder people is just silly.

Hiya Schmutzie, I'll try to get them to move this to a proper category on qjump itself, once they start adding to the site again.
