Renfe has come to mean Main Train Station in Spanish maps, directories and road signs, although this usage is not documented in Spanish dictionaries. RENFE operates 15,000 km of Spanish railways. Most of this network is broad gauge (1668 mm), the same as in Portugal but wider than in France and most of Europe. The newer High-Speed network AVE is European gauge but not yet connected with the European railway system.

RENFE probably gets my vote for best railway service in the E.U. SNCF is fantastic that is operates the ever expanding TGV network (however when TGV is introduced to an air/route, peripheral towns tend to loose services, take Chartes for example after the opening of TGV Atlantic to Le Mans and Tours). RENFE has to cover larger distances between cities and towns then other countries and also has to contend with a mountainous terrain. My experiences: Price: RENFE has got to be the cheapest per kilometre railway service I know. For example, Malaga to Cordoba, about £12 return second class.
