Renaissance Cruises ... to the Mediterranean, the Greek Isles, Tahiti and the South Pacific, Northern Europe and Scandinavia. The company ceased operations on 25 September 2001 and accommodated up to 220,000 guests in 2000. While the company had been in poor financial health for quite some time, the economic decline resulting from the September 11th terrorist attacks are credited with the demise of this cruise line.

This was a week made in hell. I just got the news, five days but what feels like an eternity ago, that the cruise line with which I had planned, booked and entirely paid a cruise of a lifetime, is no more. Renaissance Cruises, the fifth largest cruise line in the world, based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA, has gone bankrupt on September 25th, 2001, invoking the infamous Chapter 11 under US Law to be protected from creditors' claims.
