Advantages: Delightful departure from Stockholm, quite quiet midweek

Disadvantages: Crappy on board food

Tallink run a ferry from Tallinn to Stockholm and back. I used it one April and found the service to be both well priced and comfortable. I found the ticket office in central Stockholm easy to find and getting to the port wasn't particularly tricky, the boat from Stockholm leaves in the afternoon, at around 16.00 as I remember, the first few hours of journey is really pleasant as you travel between lots of little forested Swedish islands.

The arrival in Estonia is less glamorous but still quite nice, the route to the port is devoid of islands but the coastline actually looks rather similar.

There are plenty of photo options and it's an enjoyable journey if the weather's nice, if it's not - you'll likely come up with the excuse that once you've seen one tree-filled island, you've seen them all.

Whilst this may be a busy line on a Friday heading towards Tallinn with Estonian workers returning to Estonia and Swedes going over for the cheap alcohol, it's pretty lifeless in midweek, particularly out of season when there are also less travellers.

The boat had the usual services of stodgy cuisine at expensive prices and you'd be best off stocking up on some grub before leaving. As per usual, I slept in the reclining seat zone, this was an absolute dream - somehow it turned out there was only 3 of us in a room designed for around 80. The reclining seats are not particularly easy to sprawl across but there was plenty of room for comfort on the floor.

Sharing the large lounge with an Estonian girl scared of travelling by sea and Irish man whose idea of business was investing in two24 pack of beers because they were cheaper made for an eventful journey and after a bit of travelling in rather alcohol unfriendly Sweden, it was a good excuse to make up for lost time!

Summary: I recommend the reclining seats!
