Advantages: Great Variety of things to do!, You can Never get bored!
Disadvantages: Sea Sickness :(, Some people might not like full days at sea.
When it was first suggested to me by my mum that we went on a cruise I wasn't keen at all. I imagined it to be full of posh people and dressing up over the top day and night for two weeks. How wrong was I?...
We arrived at the ship from the airport to be greeted by two very friendly reps, we were taken to the cabin by the steward who was friendly and always smiling and asking how we were through out the whole holiday.
The first day was great. The entertainment team were out and about throughout the day playing games and doing quizzes. The welcome meeting introduced the staff and gave us all the information we needed to book trips and who to see if we had any problems.
We spent the first day at sea travelling from Majorca to Morocco. My mum was feeling very sea sick, so one of the reps suggested that she should eat some dry bread rolls. She wasn't sure but tried it anyway and it worked.
There is a disco on the ship, I'd recommend going in there if you are up for a cheesy night as some of the songs played were quite bad! In the room opposite there was a nightly quiz or some sort of entertainment which you could take part in. My favourite was the ten tongue twisters; I've just mastered them! Still on the entertainment side of things there was of course the nightly shows, fantastic performances from top quality singers and dancers, glitter, feathers and lots of fun.
The cruise itself was a transatlantic one, with an itinerary as follows:
Day 1: Majorca
Day 2: At Sea
Day 3: Morocco
Day 4: At Sea
Day 5: Madeira
Days 6-11: At Sea
Day 12: Barbados
Day 13: Guadeloupe
Day 14: St Thomas
Day 15: Dominican Republic and fly home
The places we visited were lovely. Morocco was a bit scary as you tend to get followed about by the locals trying to sell you "bargains" but the reps knew what they were doing and kept us safe.
Madeira was great, we chose an excursion where you go to the top of the hill and get pushed down in a sort of wicker basket chair at quite high speeds-great fun!
Next came the six days at sea which I had thought would be quite boring and maybe drag along but in fact they went quite quickly with all the entertainment that was laid on, and if you didn't want to be a part of that then there is plenty of sunbathing room on the decks, or during the day you could do a bit of shopping with the on board shops, or even visit the library!
When we arrived in Barbados we went on a jeep safari of the island. The guide was very good he kept us laughing all day and took us to all the points of interest he could think of, including a drive past his own house!
In Guadeloupe we visited the waterfalls, one of which you can go for a swim in - very refreshing! I actually slipped on some rocks here and ended up with a very painful bruise on the top of my leg… it was so painful to sit down!
In St Thomas we decided to have a day of discovery on our own and spent the day shopping, there is a lot of shopping to be done here!
Finally we arrived in the Dominican Republic, unfortunately we didn't get a chance to look around here as we left the ship and were taken straight to the airport.
When you take a cruise with Thomsons you can always be sure there is something fun to do. There are always holiday reps around organising quizzes and games to keep you amused throughout the day. Or if (like my mum!) you prefer a quieter holiday then there is no pressure whatsoever put on you if you just want to relax by the pool or out on the sun deck taking in the sea air! There is of course the swimming pools and games rooms available on board too!
Overall this was a fantastic holiday, nothing like I expected it to be, everyone was very friendly and relaxed. Meal times were great from the captains’ cocktail party on the first night, to the farewell dinner with all the waiters and waitresses singing and putting on a show!
