Advantages: Friendly staff, great food, great service,

Disadvantages: Some cabins were in need of refurbishment

We travelled on the Thomson Destiny, the largest of the Thomson fleet of cruise ships. This was my fifth cruise, my partners first. Previous cruises were with Airtours and Thomson, so I knew what to expect, but my partner was at first aprehensive about cruising, expecting it to be mainly older people and expecting sea sickness.

We flew Glasgow - Palma where we caught the ship before setting sail at 11pm. There was a farewell party on the upper deck, where the resident band played and the entertainers sang and danced whilst we slowly drifted away from Palma heading towards Sicily.

Day 1 - At sea
Day 2 - Sicily
Day 3 - Naples
Day 4 - Corsica
Day 5 - Marseilles
Day 6 - Barcelona
Day 7 - Palma

The first day at sea was about finding our way around the ship, discovering the numerous bars, restuarants and finding the quickest way between them. Not being sun worshippers we weren't bothered about getting a lounger, which was good, as when the ship is at sea, the upper deck is very busy.

We had a deluxe outside cabin. The cabin was large (by ship standards) with a lounge area, seperate bedroom and a changing area, as well as the bathroom. It was one of the more spacious cabins I've stayed in, but was in need of upgrading, the furniture being a bit dated, although the cabin was immaculate.

Staff on board couldn't do anything else to help. We were all-inclusive, which is available for a supplement, or may be free is you book early enough. The ship is cashless so all purchases are signed for, using a key card. This meant that we didn't need to wear a bracelet as is common in all-inclusive resorts.

Bar staff quickly knew who was all-inclusive and would often bring fresh drinks before your drink was finished. Drinks were mainly British brand names, Smirrnoff etc. Some premium drinks were not included in the all-inclusive package, but were available for a small supplement, i.e. 50p for a Johhny Walker Black label.

Food on board was first class, from the 24 hour self service restuarant to the formal dining room. The weekly Gala night was the perfect chance to dress up for the five course meal in the dining room. The weekly midnight buffet was simply breathtaking, with a number of sculptures made from fruit and vegatables, and with every type of cake you could think of.

Overall, this was a first class holiday from start to finish.

Summary: Great value
