Advantages: interesting, relaxing
Disadvantages: being cooped up
There are 3 routes on the trans-siberian line, the siberian, manchurian and mongolian, the latter 2 ending up in Beijing. We decided on the trans-mongolian route as it was supposedly the most interesting.
After scouring the internet we found that it is near enough impossible now to get tickets by just turning up as they are usually bought out by agencies. Seat61.com provides lots of excellent information.
Decided on a 1st class cabin in the end which is a 2 bed with a chair and a shared shower and wash basin with the room next door. Plenty of space for luggage in a nook over the door and under the beds. Toilet at the end of the hall and hot water tank at the other end. There is a restaurant car but you are probably better bringing some of your own supplies if you are particularly fussy. The train stops for about 15-20 minutes every few hours and you can buy things from the stores on the platform.
It was an interesting journey in all, very relaxing, lots to look at and highly recommended but think its a one time only kind of thing.
Summary: highly recommended

- 30/05/09 I looked into this last year. Surely doing a trip on the Tran Siberia Express is about the stop offs and places you will pass through on the way, which you have not even mentioned. We also found it very hard to find tickets and very expensive, so some tips on that would have been welcome. |

- 29/05/09 Sorry if rating seems harsh but I learned nothing from this review. How much does it cost? How long did the journey take? What of the facilities on the train>? |
