Advantages: Better than walking
Disadvantages: Expensive and untidy
I had been using Ulsterbus for quite a few years, first when I was at school and then when I was travelling to university.
The buses on shorter routes seem to be less punctual than those going on longer distances. Normally they aren't too late but it can be frustrating when you are trying to get to class on time and the drivers take their time swapping over in between locations.
The buses themselves are getting better. On local routes you are more likely to get an older bus, which won't be in as good of condition. The bigger buses like the Goldliner are much more comfortable and definitely an improvement on the other smaller buses.
The prices seem to be very expensive. When I first used them on a longer journey it was costing £8.90 for a return ticket. Currently it costs close to £15, just 4 years later. If you were only travelling occasionally then the price wouldn't be too bad but if you had to make a daily journey the costs soon mount up. These costs make it cheaper to buy a car and run it.
The bus stations are also in need of great improvement. Local stations seem to be dark and grubby while the main station at the Europa in Belfast are also in need of some tidying up, especially in the toilet area. Sometimes they aren't even open and when they are, they're very dirty and untidy and you never know who can be lurking around them. Some facilities such as a café would be useful but tidying up the key facilities should definitely be a priority.
There are sometimes special offers available for students and pensioners but you have to look around to see which is best for you and your situation.
Overall, the service provided by Ulsterbus isn't too bad for what it is but it could be greatly improved with a little work.
I'd only advise you to use them if you don't have any other options available
Summary: Only use if you cant get to your destination by other means
