So the day of the journey came, before we left home we decided to read through the boarding plans again to ensure we knew what time we had to arrive. We were booked on the 12 noon Ferry to Fishbourne and we had to be at Gunwharf Quays a minimum of an hour before departure. No problems were experienced on the A3and we left home in Sutton at 9am and ... more

Premium Review Wightlink Ferries: Ferry Cross The Solent (1592 words)

To get to the Isle of Wight there is only one way..... by boat. There is no tunnel or bridge so everyone has to get a boat or if taking a car then the only option is by ferry. The other half and I decided to spend a three night break on the island, and although the island itself is a great place to relax and unwind, I did kind of feel that the ferry companies were getting the last laugh on us. About three weeks before the trip, when the Isle of Wight was chosen as the destination for our break, we looked up all options for taking a car across the water. We could travel from Southampton or Lymington using the Red Funnel or using Wightlink from Portsmouth. ...  Read the complete review

Wightlink are one of three operators to cover the Solent, the other two being Redfunnel and Hovercraft. Wighlink operate three routes to the Isle of Wight: ~Portsmouth to Fishbourne (car ferry) ~Lymington to Yarmouth (car ferry) ~Portsmouth to Ryde (catameran passenger ferry) I mainly use the car ferry from Fishbourne to Porstmouth. The journey time is approximately 40 minutes and the ferries run on time most of the year. However during peak times such as bank holiday weekends I have been delayed for over an hour as they cannot seem to get the vehicles on and off the ferries fast enough! This can be quite frustrating! I tend to ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Wightlink Ferries: Link to the Isle of Wight (229 words)

Wightlink ferries operate three main routes between the Isle of Wight and mainland England. These include; Ryde to Portsmouth - (Catamaran - 16 minutes), Fishbourne to Portsmouth (Car Ferry - 40 minutes), and Yarmouth to Lymington (Car Ferry - 30 minutes). The route I am basing this review on is the Ryde to Portsmouth catamaran service, as I use it most frequently. The Wightlink catamarans, known as 'Fastcats' are fairly new and comfortable, but are often in the process of being maintained or repaired. When this is the case, two older replacement vessels operate. These too are well kept and take roughly the same time to cross the Solent. The newer ...  Read the complete review

During a recent camping trip in The New Forest my boyfriend and I discovered the WightLink ferry service from nearby Lymington to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. We decided to take advantage of WightLink's 'Early Bird Day Return' special offer that was being advertised while we were in the area. We were camping very near to the ferry terminal at Lymington so we booked our tickets in person rather than over the phone. The terminal is small with only 3 help desks and one member of staff on hand to serve us. This wasn't a problem for us as it was very quiet and we were served straight away, however during the busy summer months I imagine it's a different story ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Wightlink Ferries: Red Funnel Ferries a change to wight link. (789 words)

Just about a week ago i ahd the opertunity to go to the Isle of Wight, not having been for 5 or 6 years i thought it would be a good idea. How do we get there? well first it is a hell of a drive down, then we have a choice of three ports to sail from, Portsmouth with Wightlink, Southampton with red funnel or Lyminton with Wightlink, the latter not such a good choice as the ferries are shoe boxes and it adds time to the journey and takes us to the wrong side of the island. We opted to sail with Red Funnel because of the hour crossing and it would give me time to relax after the drive down. Setting off at 6 oclock saturday morning to make the lunch time crossing ...  Read the complete review
