Advantages: saves money in the long term

Disadvantages: initial £20 cost

Young person's railcards are one of the best things since sliced bread. I've had mine since January, and it costs £20 for a year's use. During that year you can get 33% off train tickets across the UK.

Look at the savings you could make on these return journeys;

Bournemouth-London Waterloo £29 (saves £14.90)
Liverpool-London £41.30 (saves £20.70)
Liverpool-Newcastle £43.65 (saves £22.35)

(I've just used these as samples as they're journeys I've used my railcard on - I didn't want to list a journey and them not let you use the railcard!)

So, that means with one Liverpool-London Journey, you've saved the price of your railcard. I think that's really impressive.

(And, little tip, if you get your railcard a few days before you turn 26, you can use it until it runs out, so you technically get a whole extra year.)

Its one of those insanely useful things that I think anyone who is on a train for more than an hour a month should have, because it WILL pay for itself pretty damn quickly.

Summary: brilliant card, all under 25s should have one
