Advantages: Saves a lot of money on train fares.

Disadvantages: Not useful for people that don't make many train journeys.

The young persons railcard or 16-25 railcard as it is now known is for people aged 16-25 so they can save money on train journeys.You can also get a railcard if you are over 26 and are in full time education.

The card costs £24 a year and saves 1/3 on train journeys throughout Great Britain.

You can apply for a railcard online, by phone or at your local ticket office. To buy from the ticket office you will need to prove your age and take along a passport size photograph. To apply online you will need a passport or driving licence number and a digital photograph of yourself.

The railcard is accepted by all train companies in Britain. You will need to show your card when buying the ticket/s and on the journey itself. The railcard can be used at any time but there is a minimum fare for all journeys made before 10am Monday to Friday.

As well as savings on rail fares there are other offers. These include: 25% off weekend breaks at some Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn and Express hotels. Free YHA Membership when you buy online your railcard online, 15% off at Caffe Uno and 25% off at Bella Italia.

I have used this card a lot of times and saved a lot of money. I got the £24 back which is the cost of the card after only a few journeys so for me it is a discount well worth having.

So long as you keep the receipt given to you then if you do lose the card you can get a replacement.
