Advantages: 3rd off rail fare, easy to buy
Disadvantages: needs renewing once a year
If you want to buy this card its now called the 16-24 railcard.
I got my 5 year 16-24 railcard 3 years ago, when I opened a student bank account with Natwest. They send me a new one every July as long as I use the account every 3 months.
This card can get young people between the ages of 16 and 24 a 3rd off rail fares in the UK. You can use it when booking online and in person.
Its worth buying, I think it is around £24, but sometimes they do half prices offers. I bought my boyfriends for £12! Found out about that offer through moneysavingexpert.com weekly email.
If you are going to make regular or very expensive rail journeys then definately buy this card. I regularly make a 41/2 hour journey home, and without my card it would be about £60 so with my railcard its £40. Then if you book on nationalexpress.co.uk on the train section, they have some trains with up to 11% off. Its a great way to save money on your train travel.
You can buy it most travel centres at railway stations. Or if you sign up to a Natwest student account then they send it to you in the post. Make sure you take a passport sized picture with you as its needed on the card to identify you.
You can also buy the railcard online, so you will need your passport picture on the computer ready to upload.
Summary: I get one free for the next 2 years!
