Advantages: Save loads of money, excellent for students away from home

Disadvantages: Initial cost of £18

The young (16-25) persons railcard has to be the best £18 I have spent (well....) at the moment your eighteen quid gets you 15 months of train fares at a 33% discount. There are however some restrictions, a minimum fare charge and something about not being able to use it before 10am, however I use mine in Birmingham and in the stations I frequent I have found that they give me the discount anyway! Bargain (I am not sure if this applies to the rest of the country)

I will not bore you of the details of conditions etc (except that you must be between 16 and 25 and a student): all you need to know is written on a leaflet that you can pick up from your nearest train station. Take along some form of ID (passport or birth certificate) a pen to fill out the form and £18 and they can sort it out there and then for you.

For me The YPRC has been invaluable as a student away at university, I use it for travelling from home to Uni, and when I at uni I use is frequently as I am often on placement so am zipping about Birmingham. The trains in Birmingham are also much better than the buses so use is for my numerous trips into the city centre to spend all the money that I have saved on train fairs!

One slight error: you only have to be 16-25 *or* a student - in fact, mature students can use one under certain circumstances. Otherwise a good op, if a little bit short.
