Advantages: Take you to where you wanna go (kind of)
Disadvantages: Please read the review.
When I was at school I would ride the school bus home for just twenty pence each way. There was an order to the school bus back in those days and I doubt it's changed much. When I was a first year I sat downstairs at the front, then as I got older me and my little posse progressed to the position at the back of the vehicle. As I got older and braver we all moved to the front at the top of the stairs and finally when I was in my final year we were 'Queens of the bus' and sat up the top and right at the back. We finally had our chance to rule the bus and sing as loud as we wanted. We did to the little people what was once done to us and we were proud of it. Many a time I sat in my broken seat that had been ripped to pieces by some vandal and examined the graffiti on the chair in front of me whilst feeling the all familiar moist wet patch on the back of my head as someone 'Greenied' at me from the back of the bus. It was just the worse experience and I absolutely hated it.
As some of you may remember from my previous reviews, we got rid of our car about a year ago. You would think I'm a dab hand at getting the buses these days then? Well actually 'No'. I think I've used the bus around five times since because I absolutely despise them. I would rather walk for an hour in the pouring rain than get on a bus. Am I mad? No I think I am pretty sane to be honest because the buses are still awful and although time has moved on, the buses haven't in certain areas. Yes they have computerised bells and billboards but the clientele is still the same and the bus drivers are still as miserable as sin.
Here are my reasons why I ate the buses!!!
1) Prams
I have two boys now so I not only have to contend with myself, I also have to get a double buggy on the bus. The bus usually pulls up and lowers down so I can get the pram on easily but before I've got the pram in place at the front of the bus the driver has briskly pulled away from the kerb and I am left looking like an idiot as I fly across the bus with pram in hand and end up in some old ladies bag!
2) The price.
How can they charge such an expensive rate for such a rubbish service and the price has just gone up again. I understand that they need to pay for the up keep of the buses but personally I'd rather they get rid of all of their computerised crap and charge us a little less! (Getting passionate now!)
3) The old people.
For some reason old people think they have a right to everything. I'm not disrespectful or anything but I have been working my ass off doing what I'm doing and trying to entertain two little boys along the way so when I can see an old lady looking at me from the corner of my eye trying to manipulate me to let her in the queue in front of me, I don't really want to play. I do though or I'll get looked down upon. When she gets on the bus and does the same to a young mum who looks exhausted too because she wants her seat then I just want to say something but I don't.
4) Smelly drunks.
How the hell does a drunk have the money to get on a bus? They sit there dribbling and half asleep and then someone informs the bus driver that he's p****ed himself so we all have to vacate the bus and wait two hours for another to continue the service whilst this one is cleaned.
5) Bus drivers.
Is it me or are all driver moody b*****ds? I always try to be polite and nice but when they don't even look up there wheel as you give them your money it does get a bit wearing.
6) School times.
I like kids and teenagers when there are hundreds of them showing off on the bus I get a little impatient. Some are lovely and I love the fact that they keep my sons entertained but some are just idiots and make such a scene which makes the driver even more peed off and moody.
Anyway I could go but I would be here all day and I have a childrens party to go to in less than an hour (Ah the joys of parenthood!).
Verdict.
Buses are far too expensive and are never a good experience. I recommend that you leave a little bit earlier and walk. That way you will be saving money and getting a bit of exercise too.
Summary: Not a pleasant experience down ths end of the country.

- 10/02/09 Glad I don't live where you are. The buses are pretty good here in Edinburgh I have to say - but go to Glasgow and its more like your neck of the woods. |

- 10/02/09 Did you know that bus drivers have to pass a special test to see who can grunt the loudest before they are allowed to drive a bus? Another good read. Carol x |
