Glasgow to London return in 28 hours
Author Name: Fiona McGhee
Advantages: got us there and back on time for a cheap price
Disadvantages: felt like cattle, very cramped
Just got off the megabus marathon this morning and I'm shattered and in agony from sitting so long.
Left Glasgow on time, stopped off at Preston and Birmingham and we were not allowed to get off the bus, even to stretch your legs, horrible! By the time we got to London we were crippled and so tired as we couldn't sleep on the bus.
Most people had put bags and jackets so they could spread out so to sit even within speaking distance of my daughter I'd to ask two people to lift their stuff and they weren't happy at all, muttering in Armenian all the way to London. I'd paid my ticket as well yet made to feel they were entitled to more space as they were on the bus first. Why aren't seats allocated when booked? We also had 2 people being sick on the bus as they were facing backwards, not pleasant.
On the way back the bus left late and we hit rush hour traffic leaving London but mercifully we were so tired we fell asleep almost as soon as we sat down. This bus stopped at Manchester, Bolton, Preston and Carlisle and was an unnecessary meandering journey. Fortunately we were allowed off for 10 mins near Manchester which was wonderful as the heating had been on full blast all the way since London and we were parboiled. Fresh air, proper toilets and we left refreshed, what a difference!
There were so many going to to Carlisle and Glasgow that they could have put us all on one coach and headed straight up, sending the second coach (waiting behind us for the spill-over passengers) to Manchester, Bolton and Preston.
You gte what you pay for but was pretty sure that cattle would have been treated better and will avoid using the bus again unless seats are booked and reserved in advance and there are actual stops. Overall the journey down would have been improved 100% by just letting us off for a 10 min breather.
The bus drivers varied from grumpy shouters to chatty wanna-be pilots, one even telling us the temperature as we arrived in Glasgow (?).
The buses themselves were new and spotlessly clean, and were driven well by competent drivers, whether chatty or grumpy.
Its budget travel at its very best and worse, but I'd try another method before going by bus if you want to arrive in anything but a crippled, zombie state.
Summary: Its budget travel at its very best and worse
