Advantages: Low cost travel, easy to use website, helpful staff

Disadvantages: Takes longer than the train and staff occasionally grumpy

National Express operates a coach and train travel service throughout the UK, and some services abroad. I have used the coach service many times and have always had a pleasant experience.

The website (nationalexpress.co.uk) is easy to use and you can book travel online using a debit or credit card. They have a range of locations that are served in the UK and you can find some very cheap seats through their 'funfare' offers, sometimes as low as £1 each way, if you are travelling between major cities at off peak times.

I have been able to travel between Leeds and London for £2 return which is a great deal. The journey took just over 4 hours which is a couple of hours longer than the train, but well worth it for the low cost.

When booking the coach seats you are given up to date availability and you can get the ticket instantly and print it off, saving you a trip to the ticket office. It can also be sent to your mobile for an extra 50p for added convenience.

There is an option of insuring your journey for £1 per passenger, protecting you against an injury or loss/damage to baggage.

When you travel you can take small items of luggage onto the coach which can be stored under your seat or in an overhead compartment. You're also able to carry 2 medium sized suitcases in the luggage compartment under the coach, if required.

I have always found the coaches clean and comfortable, with air conditioning and curtains if you don't want the sun in your face. The drivers are usually very friendly and helpful, though occasionally a bit grumpy and sarcastic if they have had a bad day with nuisance passengers, though this is to be expected when you are dealing with so much of the general public!

Overall I would recommend this service to anyone wanting low cost travel and a pleasant journey.

Summary: Try the funfares, they are great value
