Advantages: Easy, cheaper and useful.
Disadvantages: Break sometimes!
I love my oyster card.
The best thing about the oyster card is that it's a lot cheaper than buying normal tickets. For example, a bus journey is a mere 90p on your oyster card, whereas to buy a ticket will cost you £2.
Also, when using your oyster card, it will not let you spend over what an all-day travelcard costs. So once you have spent that much on your card, the rest of your journeys for the day are free!
There are different kinds of oyster cards. There are childrens ones, where I believe everything is around half price, 14-15 year old ones, 16+ and adult. You can probably get a student type one as well, but I'm not sure.
The only problem with oyster cards are that they break quite easily. Sometimes they seem to stop working randomly, with no explanation, and they are also very easy to break in half! However, they do save you a lot of money and are definitely worth it.
The usage of the oyster card is being expanded, as currently it cannot be used on some train services, but tfl are hoping to change that in the future.
It is definitely a cheaper and easier way of travelling around london. It is quick and easy to top up, and on the website, if you register your oyster card, there are options to let it top up whenever your balance drops below a certain amount, which is useful. It can hold up to £90 of credit, I believe, and is just easy to use.
Summary: Travel round london with ease...
