What the hell is going on?? In the last two days of my life I have experienced some of the most manic occurences possible whilst on the legal side of narcotic enhancement! I have just spent two days in London and travelled on the under/overground (whatever it is) quite a bit in those two days. Where I come from you purchase a ticket for the train point yourself in the right direction i.e. one of two platforms and then get on the train that comes. But oh no not in London. Apparently there are two types of train or company that service stations these appear to be underground and a more direct train, which, from what I can gather is 'mainline'?? forgive me if I am wrong. The first time I found this out was before I had got into the station and the fella just looked blanky at us and told us we should go upstairs! Sorry!! The next time though, and you should try this if you want to see a cross between Victor Meldrew and Albert Steptoe we got on the underground with British Rail tickets and then tried to get through the barrier! Oh boy how unhappy was this fella! In all fairness he did let us through! The second point is not so much the underground but the people who frequent it. They seem to lack any form of social skills whatsoever. I am not just talking impolite, this is plain ignorance. If you want to experience it just STAND STILL on the left hand side of an escalator at some point and see what happens!! I fully appreciate that people want to get to places and fast and also appreciate that there are signs stating to stand on the left but a simple excuse me seems a hard thing to muster in these parts. In conclusion though apart from the happy staff/customers and the wacky set-up the underground gets you around fast and there are trains literally at every station when you go in so not much waiting. If you go to London you have to try it!!

- 11/02/01 I read your op a number of times and could not make sense of paragraph 3. Are you saying the organisation is confused or there are a mixture of overground and underground trains.
As to tube/train passengers - you must be from outside London. Many tube travellers want to get from A to B ASAP and they don't take too kindly to people standing still on the left hand side of the escalator - that's what the signs are for !!
If you reword your op - I will re-read and re-rate. |
