Advantages: Shame to lose stations
Disadvantages: obviously ran out of use
Are you aware that on the London Underground network there are discontiued stations littering the line? Some of you may think you are seeing things as you pass between stations, glancing at dark dingy platforms in the distance. Well let me tell you, you are not imagining it. Im going to describe where they are to you so you can keep a look out. Lets start on the Central line Central Line ------------ Name: British Museum. Location: Between Holborn and Tottenham Court Road Closed: 1933 Reason: Too close to the competing station of Holborn. Closed but used for special ops during World War 2. The access tunnels have been filled with Concrete to provide foundations for a new building. Closed to the world. Name Name: Wood Street. Location: Between Shepherds bush and White City Closed: 1947 Reason: Lack of use after the opening of White City. Only intended to be an interim measure during the London Exhibition of 1908. Was the terminus of Central Line West for many years. Name: Ongar/North Weald. Location: branch Line after the new terminus at Epping. Closed: 1994 Reason: Lack of use after modernisation of BR trains in the area. It's operated by enthusiasts of railways now. It once ran steam trains before the underground electrified the line. Picadilly Line -------------- Name: Aldwych Location: Branch Line from Holborn Closed: 1994 Reason. The station was used as an Air Raid Shelter during WW2. opened in 1907, Aldwych formed a part of a different railway line which was alagimated in the 30's. Kept on as a peak hours service, it was shut in 1994 after the lifts needed replacing. £3 million was too much for such a low user station. Name: Down Street Location: between Hyde Park Corner and Green Park Closed: 1932 Reason. Lack of use because of bigger stations nearby. It was used as a shelter for the Gover
nment during WW2. It was reinforced to take bomb blasts as well as refitted with secret war room equipment. It was abandoned after the war. Name: Brompton Road Location: Between Knightsbridge and South Kensington Closed: 1932 Reason. See above except this time it was Knightsbridge on a separate line that caused the loss in trade. Again used in the War as a Cabinet room. Abandoned after the War. Name: York Road Location: Between Caledonian Road and Kings Cross Closed: 1932 Reason. Lack of usage. It was never a busy stationand closed during the reshuffle of 1932. Northern Line. -------------- Name: King William Street Location: End of the original Stockwell line. Closed:1900 Reason:One of the first stations on the line, it existed for a short period of time but was superceded by the Monument station. The tunnel for the Northern line was switched to a more "Northerly" course and missed out the Station completely. Has also been used for air raids. Name: South Kentish Town Location: between Northern line split after Camden Town and before Kentish Town. Closed: 1924 Reason. Lack of use due to its proximity to Kentish town and Camden town on the same line. Like most disused stations, it was reopened as an air raid shelter in WW2. Name: City Road Location: Between Angel and Old Street. Closed: 1922 Reason: Again, Lack of used due to location, it only operated for 21 years. District Line ------------- Name: St Mary's Location: Between Whitechapel and Aldgate East Closed: 1938 Reason: The station was closed after planners decided to move the Aldgate East Station nearer towards St Marys. It was destroyed 2 years later by a bomb dropped by the Germans. Name: Tower of London Location: Between Mark Lane and Tower Hill Closed: 1884 Reason: A very short life time of op
eration. 2 years. It was built as a temporary station while Mark Lane was being built. Name: Mark Lane Location: between Tower Hill and Monument Closed: 1967 Reason: It was renamed to Tower Hill in 1946 and needed replacing due to expansion. A new Tower Hill opened in 1967 and the old station was closed. Name: South Acton Location: Branch from Acton Town Closed:1959 Reason. It operated mainly as a freight line until its closure. Closure came from Lack of usage. Metropolitan Line ----------------- Name:Lords/Marlborough Road/ Swiss Cottage Location: between Baker Street and Finchley Road. Closed: 1939 Reason. these stations existed as part of the Metropolitan line between 1925 and 1939. In 1939 the nearby station of St Johns wood on the Jubilee line opened and caused the stations to close from lack of use. Name: Uxbridge Rd Location: Branch Line from Latimer Road. Closed: 1940 Reason. Lack of use. Hammersmith and City Line ------------------------- Name: Wood Lane Location: Between Shepherds Bush and White City. Closed:1910 Reason. This was in direct competition with the other Wood Lane station on the Central line. It was soon realised that only one was needed and it closed 2 years after it opened. I hope you have found that interesting. I will add more stations as I think of them or find out about them.

- 07/07/01 First there were train spotters - now it's station spotters! I shall look out for them on my way to work on Monday. That's if I can get a space anywhere near a window. |
