Advantages: Fast, economic, inexpensive
Disadvantages: None
I remember visiting relatives in Islington London back in late 40s early 50s and I was fascinated when my cousin took me on the tube system. To a ten year old it was exciting and simply the best way to travel. Many years later I still visit London (The best city in the world) to see shows, explore the city itself, and just bathe in its splendor and wealth of history. To do justice you need several lifetimes but having only one I can not waste a second. My visits are about three or four each year and would fit in more if I were able to. What a fantastic boon the 'TUBE' is! You can get to where you want within the zone you pay for, with minimal fuss. You can plan your route and stops before hand, go topside and do whatever you want to then carry on with your jounrney to the next 'port of call'. With your day ticket you can go where you want within your zone, no fuss, no problem. The weather doesn't concern you too much, there are no parking problems, no road rage, no traffic jams or queues, no worry about bumping your car or car jacking even and what about those speed cameras? Oh yes! I do know there is a down side and I know you wont let me forget it. There might be a little overcrowding at times. Hey, if you want something to moan about then come up here to Yorkshire where we do not have the luxury of the 'TUBE' and try getting from Bradford to Leeds in the morning or worse still from Bradford to Bingley. Honestly, from my experience of visiting London, the best way by far to travel is by 'TUBE'. It's fast, efficient, inexpensive, exciting and better for the environment. Of course I don't have to use it every day every week all year round so unlike natives of London I can only see it from a visitors viewpoint but can I be that far from the truth? I love London, its people, it's history, eveything about it, including the 'TUBE;

- 02/04/02 It is a good way to travel - except during rush hour! |

- 02/04/02 I don't think anyone would see the tube fares as cheap (inexpensive)...
My wife uses them all the time, to travel up to see me in hospital, high cost, bad service, dirty and seldom a seat.....

- 02/04/02 Um...I'm glad you've found the tube reliable, inexpensive etc, but as a Londoner myself, I can't say I share any of your positivity. You must have just been lucky. Tube fares are horrendously expensive. My boyfriend pays £90 for a monthly ticket. I also frequently get to work late because of some delay or another. The tubes smell, are hot and sticky and during the rush hour, absolute hell. |
