Advantages: clean trains, arrived at my station and left on time, introduction of quiet carriages
Disadvantages: slightly late at my destination station
I have just been to Yorkshire and took the train, my journey was between Burton on Trent in the Midlands and Pontefract in West Yorkshire. The bulk of my journey was on a Virgin Train (Derby-Wakefield) with a little local service either side. I ordered my tickets through thetrainline.com (see my review on that for a rundown on that service). Booking through thetrainline gives you a guaranteed reserved seat on Virgin trains which I found very useful because their trains are normally quite busy, as was this one.
As for punctuality, well my journey depended on me changing trains twice so I needed punctuality from them and im pleased to say that on my outward journey my train arrived on time and it left Derby station on time although by the time it got to Wakefield it was about 4 mins late so I dont know if there setting unrealistic times for there journeys or what but I found this interesting because the same thing happened on the way back, being 5 mins late at my destination station.
Another impressive feature was the introduction of a "Quiet Carriage" where mobile phone use was prohibited, at the request of other customers apparently so its good to see them listening to their customers. I did think it was rather ironic though that I couldnt use my Virgin Mobile on my Virgin Train!!!
Cleanliness of the trains is an important factor and im pleased to say that both on my outward and return journeys the train was excellent in terms of cleanliness, I couldnt see any dirt or litter anywhere so well done Virgin.
Overall I was impressed with Virgin Trains, they've taken a lot of stick they really have but on the 2 journeys I made I was impressed.
Well done Virgin good to see your improving.
