I bought one of these before traveling around Asia. It said on the label something along the lines of 'ideal to keep in hand luggage for those unexpected emergencies' it claimed that the items inside were small enough to go through as hand luggage and werent a threat. WRONG!
The kit seemed very useful, with all the absolute essentials to fix that hole in your favourite top (which was my case on a previous holiday), a loose or lost button etc. It also didnt take up much room at all as it is quite tiny.

It went through security at Manchester & Schipol Airport. When I arrived in Singapore I needed to resew a button on my coat, so out came my "handy" kit. The scissor broke as soon as I put my finger and thumb through them and there was no eye in the needle to thread the cotton!!!! It was so useless, in an angry fury I threw it back into my bag and forgot about it until I got to Singapore......they didn't seem very happy at all with the scissors, safety pins, needles and cotton picker and took them out and gave me back the measuring tape and cotton - making the kit even more useless to me! I stuck the measuring tape in my bag (as this seemed the only useful thing, and to this day I do still use it!) and threw the case and thread away.

On reflection maybe its fine for european hand luggage but maybe not in Asia, especially Singapore!
I certainly wouldn't recommend this kit though, its rubbish!!
