Real Leather Passport Holder
Advantages: Classy, Individual, Elegant
Disadvantages: Pink ones are so passe!
Recently I was off work for several months with a slipped disc. Despite the fact that she lived forty-odd difficult miles away from me, my mum was really great at coming up to see me, bringing me magazines and fruit etc. I decided to get her a present to say thanks, and seeing as how she was planning a holiday to Madagascar, I decided to get her a real leather passport holder.
I have never really had need of one of these myself, seeing as how my utter terror of planes prevents me from most foreign travel. I fly if I have to, eg for work or emergencies, but not for fun, so I never engaged with the whole "stylish traveller" thing. My mother, on the other hand, is quite the adventurer, and has made many exotic trips over the last few years - making up for lost time bringing me up I suppose! She is also rather style-conscious, and likes to travel wearing her best clothes and Prada sunglasses! Hahaha... I shouldn't tease, but I tend to call her Lady Penelope when I'm dropping her off at Heathrow!
I researched various options online, and plumped for a gorgeous navy blue crocodile-effect leather passport-holder from Aspinals. I thought this was ideal for my mum as she would find the standard Smythson pastel ones a bit tacky and "Paris Hilton". Aspinals was also a decent name, which I knew she'd appreciate.
The item arrived, wrapped in tissue and bound with a little gold sticker. I gave it to my mother when she next came over, and she unwrapped it with delighted anticipation. It was absolutely lovely! Really beautifully made. The intense blue leather was both bold and timeless, and the interior was lined in the softest, most velvety cream suede. I immediately made a mental note to get one for myself! Such a gorgeous item could not be exclusive to jetsetters! My mum was really pleased - I know this both because she told me so effusively, and because she later gloated to my sister about her new treasure!
Unfortunately, within a week, she had lost her handbag, with the passport-holder inside. She was absolutely certain the bag had been targeted because of it, which was a sign to me that she thought it had cost more than it had! In fact, as I embarrassedly explained, it was only £17.50, half price in the sale.
I went online and ordered her a new one, along with a red leather/beige suede version for myself. I found some passport-sized notebooks in Muji which I put inside mine, and now I use it as a super-classy handbag memo-holder.
If you like luxurious accessories, you can get a lot of bang for your buck when choosing a real leather passport-holder.
Summary: Classy? Yes, M'Lady!
