“ Brand: Totes / Type: Dome Umbrella / Bird Cage Style „
After the disappointment I had with my last umbrella which was just useless I was on the lookout for a new one that would actually protect me from the rain! My friend treated me to a Totes PVC Dome Umbrella which I was dead chuffed about as I had seen various people walking around with clear umbrellas and I really liked the look of them.
The totes umbrella is a clear pvc with a coloured rim, mine has a soft pink rim which looks really nice! The handle is a long thin one (this means it cannot be folded down and put in your bag like a compact umbrella) and it is curved at the bottom and the colour of the base of the handle will match the trim of the pvc.It is a dome shape when it is open and this is fantastic for protecting you from the rain as it comes right down over your head and the beauty of these umbrella's is that you can see where you are going!! Normally I am a little lethal with an umbrella and am always walking into things as I can't see where I am going.
To put the umbrella up it is just like any other, there is a little silver clip to press to release the catch so you can push the umbrella up until it clicks open. To close the umbrella you simply repeat the opening process but this time at the top of the umbrella. The handle makes it comfortable to hold when the umbrella is either up or down and it is a really lightweight one too so it is easy to carry.
The best thing about this umbrella is the dome shape which means the wind cannot blow it inside out, and we all know what a nightmare that is when that happens! There is only one downside with this umbrella and that is that the catch is a little stiff when putting the umbrella down and you may need to use both hands to do this. I am unsure whether it will get easier as I have only used the umbrella about five times so far!
The cost of the dome umbrella is around £3.00 and you can find them on various online sites and also many discount stores have now started selling them. There is a wide range of colours including black so they aren't just for females to use. Also I have now seen patterned ones, and even a Me To You one which is very cute!
I really cannot recommend this umbrella enough, it is brilliant!
Thank you for reading my review :)
I think we can safely say, these umbrellas have solved a lot of problems for the hair-conscious women out there! The weather we encounter here in the UK normally consists of downpours, ruining the careful hairstyles we tediously spend our mornings creating!
The umbrella is much larger in length compared to normal umbrella's, so it covers down to at least the shoulders. The whole head-area is virtually rain-free, protecting your hair. The clear material means it is easy to see out of, even when wet, so you do not have to look down at the floor. This is especially good for those of us who wear glasses, because they do not get wet either, and prevent accidents occurring. The dome shape of the umbrella means it is also safer for passers by. The surface area is decreased slightly so they do not have to manoeuvre so far out the way to avoid the sharp spikes at the end of normal umbrellas. It literally is like walking in a bubble!
The curved end to the umbrella is good for hanging onto coat hooks which aids the drying process. The type of material is also perfect for surface run off... you rarely have to leave the umbrella standing up to dry because the PVC does not infiltrate the moisture.
These umbrellas are available in a range of colours, some even have more than one! They are easy to recognise because of the clear frame of the dome. They are in fashion, so readily available to buy from good high-street stores across the country. I would recommend looking in souvenir shops, particularly if you live in larger cities (i.e. London) because they recognise the NEED for an umbrella in this country! They are priced for around £5 but you might find cheaper versions on the internet (a quick look on ebay: £4.99 is around average).
The only disadvantage being the sheer size of the umbrella. With smaller ones, you can fit them inside your bag very easily. These ones require you to hold them, so obviously some rain could fall inside the tied up umbrella. When you go to open them up, you get a bit of a downpour! I store mine in the porch at home, and often find bugs living in it when i haven't used it for a long time! A minor disadvantage to say the least!
I would recommend these umbrellas to the fashion conscious women and men out there. The bird-cage style is also very much 'in' this season too, so you will be bang on trend!
Funnily enough I love rain, I don't however like to get my hair drenched when I'm out and about and have my make up washed down my face so I usually have an umbrella in my car for such occasions. Most of my umbrellas are the small handy ones that fit into a bag but recently I noticed alot of these clear dome umbrellas in the shops and online and it made me all nostalgic for the one I had as a kid in the seventies. I couldn't resist buying one and mine cost £3 on ebay. These brollies are all over the place at the moment, on Amazon, ebay, in Primark and they cost very little really so if you're tempted now is the time to buy one.
I plumped for the clear dome with a black trim which means mine has a black handle, black spike on top and a line of black along the bottom of the dome just like in the picture above. They come in all sorts of colours though and some have patterned bits on them too. I liked the black one because it will suit any occasion but these are so cheap you could buy more than one colour if you're more of a colour lover than I am.
The dome shape makes these perfect for keeping your hair dry as it kind of cocoons your head and shoulders so they do keep you very dry as long as your shoulders aren't wider than the brolly. Being clear it means you can see where you are going through the dome and also people can see it's you under there too. Obviously if the rain isn't coming straight down other parts of you are going to get wet but that's the same with all umbrellas.
The first problem I noticed was the size of the umbrella, they're not huge but are about twice as long as the ones that fit in bags meaning these won't. As I keep mine in the car it isn't a huge problem but once you've taken it with you and need to store it somewhere it does get awkward. I have a huge handbag so I tend to lay mine on the top of my bag in between the straps so I don't have to carry it but truthfully it still gets in the way and if I don't pay attention to what I'm doing I could easily poke people with it so they aren't as convenient as the smaller ones.
The second thing I wasn't fond of was how stiff the catch is that holds the spokes up. It's so stiff I actually find myself cringing and having to use both hands to put the umbrella down because it really feels like it's going to trap my fingers. That may just be my particular umbrella though and not a common fault with all of them.
Apart from those two minor gripes though I do really love it, I had one as a child and I adored it and took it eveywhere with me until it got broken and I've never seen them again since until now. I really like the shape of it and of course they are currently very trendy so it's nice to be up to date for once! They are widely available for a very small price and suit all age groups but I'm not so sure they would suit men. A 4 star rating from me, I've deducted a star just for the inconvenience of not being able to pop these into a bag but they really are lovely and a great way to keep your head and shoulders completely dry.
So what could be more annoying than rain? Well in my opion the answer is rain and wind and silly silly umberellas that turn inside out!!!! Many an umberella has been lost to the wind. It's so frustrating when you want to keep dry and end up soaked anyway in the umbrella wind war!
I purchased this cute dome umbrella last year on a whim from a cheap shop whilst visiting Birmingham it cost me £2 you can buy them online for £3 but pretty sure as the weather gets worse they will be all over the shops again.
These umbrellas are not like others they are dome shaped and long which unfortunately means you can not fit them into your bag. Personally though I hook mine over my strap of my bag and it stays there just fine or I hold it. The handle is curved in a coloured plastic depending on what colour you have will depend on what colour your handle is mine is black.
To put the umberella up you push in a little metal button then push the umberella up which opens your clear dome brolley. Once up you use it as with any other brolley over your head to protect you from the rain. They are quite light weight and so easy to carry as you walk.
I have found my brolley to be very good keeps my head dry and most importantly does not blow inside out in the wind which is the best thing about it.
I recommend these umberellas to anyone who gets frustrated by the wind turning their brolley inside out.
No-one likes rain, obviously! I'm not going to write a review on how rain is made magically better by this umbrella! However, in my opinion, it makes rain a little more fun!
Forget your average black totes umbrella, this is the way forward. This umbrella works in the same way as all umbrellas; keeping you dry! It's main selling point is the dome shaped top that is see through, meaning you can bring it down right past your face and still see where you are going. It also has a shapely sturdy handle unlike most normal unbrellas so its easier to hold onto in that gust of wind. Speaking of wind, its very hard to blow this umbrella inside out which is a major plus as most of the umbrellas I have had to throw in the bin have been due to wind induced damage!
The umbrella is bigger than your usual umbrella yes and you probably can't fit it in your handbag. But the handle makes it easy to carry and knowing you are going to keep mega dry and have an awesome umbrella is worth it!
They do come in various colours if you shop around and you can get a good price. There's hundreds on ebay!
I love my dome umbrella. Next up for me it's the umbrellas that have lights in them!! Imagine how cool you would look on firework night with one of those!
Thanks for reading :)
Due to the unfortunate weather that we encounter here in the UK, I have purchased a Dome Walking Umbrella.
I am very particular about my hair, not in a vain way, but as soon as a drop of rain hits it, it turns into an instant fuzzball. The large dome frame defiantely gives me great shelter from the rain, it also kept my shoulders dry. Although its large in size, it was quite lightweight to carry.
It was also very sturdy, so if you are caught in a hurricane or blizzard, this defiantely will not blow inside out, like some of the smaller compact ones do.
The only disadvantage to this product is the large size, like I said before it is lightweight, but very cumbersome once the rain had stopped, or whilst I was walking in and out off shops or sheltered areas. I also found it was very difficult to shake of the rain after use, I think this might have something to do with the material.
Overall, if you are concerned about getting clothes or hair wet, this is a must buy. I would also suggest buying it directly from Amazon, as they cost alot more form other sites and stockists.
For my daily commute to the office I need a hard wearing umbrella for our great British weather! I have been through so many of the small handy umbrellas that fit easily into your handbag but just a small gust of wind sends it flying or blows inside out. I find it so embarrassing when you try to wrestle with the wind trying to get it back the right way and wishing that the ground would open up and swallow you whole. I understand why you see so many broken umbrellas discarded on pavements and in bins!
I was ecstatic when I received a Totes Dome Umbrella as a gift last year. I had never seen one in a shop but had seen them in various fashion magazines and lusted after one for months.
My umbrella is clear with bright blue bubbles scattered across the top. They are now available in various outlets in a number of colours. These can be seen on their website. Some of them are so gorgeous, I want them all!
This particular umbrella is made by Totes the makers of the well known and popular slipper socks. Totes have been around for many years making quirky and conservative accessories to suit all ages and personalities. I think an umbrella tells you a lot about a person and Totes are on hand to suit all tastes and ages.
The dome umbrellas are full size and has a hooked handle to hold onto or hang over your arm. This is usually the same colour as the accent colour of the umbrella (with mine being blue). There is a tie with a popper to hold the umbrella closed when not in use. The umbrella is very quick to put up and down thanks to the umbrella not having the nasty metal clip that pinches your fingers! The main umbrella is completely see through so you can see where you are going so you don't accidently walk into somebody. The end pieces are covered with plastic which makes them safe and smooth so will not poke anybody's eye out. When up the canopy completely covers your head and shoulders from even that sidewards rain.
I have received so many compliments about my umbrella and they certainly do turn heads due to their unusual shape.
My top tip for these umbrellas are to sprinkle a little talc inside the umbrella every now and then to prevent the plastic wrinkling and splitting. I have found that this has prolonged the life of my umbrella.
The downside is that they are rather large to carry around on a daily basis - however if you can hook it over you arm it makes it a little easier if you have got your hands full.
Availability & Price
My umbrella was purchased for £9.99 from Sainsburys. It is available in blue bubble effect, black or pink. However on their website prices start from £14 depending on the size and design.
I love my umbrella and I find them great value for money. If anything ever happened to mine I would definately replace it with another from the Totes range. You will be willing it to rain just so that you can try it out!
