Advantages: good laugh
Disadvantages: slave labour
.........yes camp america is a rip off..BUT i did find it a ......( here we go,nice and cheeseball) one of the best summer's of my life so far. as an organisation goes camp america i suppose is like many others, just offering consumers what they want. 1.camps need cheap labour because americans will not work for that kind of money. 2. people like to travel but if you're like me and too chicken to do it by yourself its for you. you get bunged in with a load of other people wanting to do the same thing. you can laugh or cry together and it can even be fun! when i actually turned up at the camp america seminar i was late, consequently i was one of the first people made to get up and sing a song!! But believe me this was just small potatoes compared to life in the camp. I decided to work with special needs children and adults. To be honest i was very scared but when i got to the camp there were over 80 new councellors from all over the world. we had an orientaion week prior to the camper's arrival, where i was nick-named 'may i ask a question please?'. it paid off though, i had some of the best characters in the place. it may sound naff but every day really was a challenge but mostly brilliant ones. i had my bad days like everyone; let's see.... i was hit, kicked, felt up and had a few rocks thrown at me as well as being called 'beedy eyes' for three and a half hours one night!!but it was all a tremendos laugh. honest! if like me you're looking for something be it new friends or (cheeseball) trying to find out a little bit more about yourself, then do something like this. To give someone the courage to swim by themselves or see faces light up when they get an award is just wonderful. word of warning. do not do this for the money or the luxurious accomodation. do it for you and what you can offer to others.

KathrynMackinnon - 27/09/01 True, it's worth all the hard work and trauma when you look at the photos of the campers and you see that they look truly alive and so happy because of you. |
