Advantages: good hotel
Disadvantages: unqualified, selfish tour manager with no historical knowledge, basic coach - no toilet
Be aware of travelling with Newmarket Holidays!!!!
We booked with New Market Holidays "The Royal Yacht Britannia and Edinburgh Tattoo weekend" by coach.
The trip was rather chaotic with a very unqualified tour manager (Anne) who was rather interested in pleasing herself than us -customers.
Her lack of common sense, poor knowledge, bad planning, wasting our valuable time and definitely lack of empathy were the factors which have spoiled our trip.
The coach started its journey Friday morning at 6:00 am in South End and was supposed to take us via scenic Yorkshire Dales to Washington Holiday Inn Hotel near New Castle.
Well....first of all we haven't seen scenic Yorkshire Dales as we were dumped on traffic lights in Harrogate and advised to do shopping at Debenhams as well as have something to eat.
We could not understand why??? as we had our comfort break just an hour before and spent over 60 minutes on one of the Services on A1(M), where everyone had late lunch!
Visiting Harrogate wasn't on our itinerary, we were not hungry as we had already eaten, we didn't want to drink too often as our coach didn't have toilet facilities!!! We weren't allowed to stay on the coach either, as they (our tour manager - Anne and two coach drivers) simply ignored us and drove off somewhere for over an hour. We have to admit that we felt very dissapointed!!! ....the weather wasn't very pleasant , we were tired after 7 hours of travelling and not even reaching New Castle area!!! Dumped in the middle of shopping area in Harrogate!!!! What a nonsense!
After an hour break at Harrogate our "lovely" tour manager Anne, announced that she is going to re-schedule our dinner at the Hotel as we are already running late!!! Well... I guess why ...???
Finally at 6:10 pm we arrived at our hotel and had something to eat around 8:00pm. Luckily the Hotel had a good standard and we could finally start to relax :-)
Next day we were lucky enough to visit The Royal Yacht Britannia and attend the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
After the Tattoo, on the coach our tour manager PROMISED US to stop as soon as possible to use toilets.
Unfortunately on the way back to our Hotel which was situated near New Castle (over 3hours journey) the coach didn't stop to let people use Toilet Facilities!!!!!
First of all we were taken back to New Castle following A68 which is scenic route (but believe me, not in the middle of night - pitch black views) the other thing is that following A68 takes more time than following A1, another thing is that A68 route doesn't have 24 hour Services!!!!!!!!
Common sense and a bit of intelligence would be very helpful when planning a route for a coach without Toilet facilities !!!!!
All of us were really tired because it was a long, long day and having a short stop to have a wee would be very appreciated by everyone. Unfortunately it didn't happen and for the next 3 hours I had to hold my bladder not to pee on my seat!
Breakfast, everyone checked out, 10:00 am everyone on the coach ready to go but... what a Surprise!!! The coach can't start!!! The battery is flat, well .... did the driver turn the master key off??? I don't think so....
We were asked to relax and wait in the hotel's lounge and have something to drink. Our wonderful tour manager arranged free drinks for all of us - two jugs of tap water !!!
Never mind .... coach was fixed two hours later but because of that the trip to York was cut short. All in all we could have had a better trip in a cattle truck.
It looks like it was our first and last trip with New Market Horrordays... (ups... Holidays ???)
Summary: We could have had better time travelling on our own - by car with a guide-book!
