Advantages: Superb location
Disadvantages: Cost, airlines/transfers, Customer Service
I'm part of a group of tourists who traveled from Manchester to Volos in September.
We all had mixed views about the accomodation as we'd all stayed in various locations throughout Pelion, Greece.
We exchanged e-mails addresses aboard our returning flight following a horrendous return journey. We are starting a campaign to make people aware of how complaints are treated by Tapestry and the sub standard airlines and transfers they use.
In short the accomodation we stayed in was OK. It was called Hotel Diplomats. Our rep was a nightmare but all in all it was enjoyable - especially the boat that comes with the deal. We had some water problems (no hot, then none at all for about five mornings in a row).
Things got really silly on the return flight. As the plane began to taxi down the runway we were informed that during our four-hour return flight we would have no access to any toilets.
This was just after departing Volos Airport - which only had one loo. Many passengers had therefor "held it in" waiting to use one of the 3 that was supposed to be on the plane.
Can you imagine being stuck on the plane dying for a pee, then hearing you couldnt go for another four hours!!!!
As the flight went on people began ignoring the crew and entering the toilets to pee in the sinks and the overflowing loos. Who could blame them. The urine was leaking into the aisles and the plane stunk.
We believe there was a health and safety issue, in addition to the obvious inconvinience.
I called Tapestry to complain and had the phone put down on me. An other member of the e-mailers recieved a pitiful explanation from Tapestry in writing.
Anyway we're looking to hear from others on the flight, or believe Tapestry simply charge above the odds for sub standard flights, transfers, accomodation, or hire cars. We'd also encourage you to complain to BBC's Watchdog and get Tapestry to explain!!!

- 24/01/05 about 18 months prior to your holiday, we travelled from Manchester to Volos, on one of EAL's antiquated 737-200's. The fact it got there at all is about all the recommendation I could give it. The accomodation on the aircraft was shabby, the upholstery unclean, and the toilets disgusting. I remember travelling on these planes 20 years ago and even then they werent new, so god knows how old they are!
Returning the aircraft identically to how you describe apparently had NO toilet facilities, I cnt pretned the situation was as dire as yours, but I cannot say I am surprised. We too wrote to Tapestry and asked them why a premier holiday operator uses such a seemingly down at heel charter airline for their Manchester flights, particulalry as their Heathrow clients got the useage of a brand new BMI 737-400!! Their response was non-comittal and dismissive, along the lines of thanks for your feedback, and goodnight vienna.
EAL are based in Bournemouth, and BMI operate out of East midlands airport so I can't see the value in continuing to alienate their customers in the North of the UK by using them. Tapestry do though offer a superb holiday and we even went again with them this Year, hoping that we could stomach their appalling aircraft. Sure enough it was the same relic from the previous holiday. No in-flight entertainment, poor accomodation unclean toilets.
Tapes try really dont seem to be bothered about this, and I'm sure we are far from the only members of their client base who feel the same.
Tapestry 's holiday itself was superb, (we even braved their shoddy charter flight again in 2004)

- 27/11/04 That is awful - if the plane is not going to have toilets available for that length of time, then passenegers should have been informed in plenty of time before they boarded. Never mind health and safety, that is just common sense. Good luck with your complaints, I hope you get something out of it.
