Advantages: Keeps clothes protected and reduces creasing.
Disadvantages: No good for longer length dresses.
My daughter often appears in competitions and her stage school's shows. Because of this we have to travel around a great deal, usually from greater London to south London, and quite often further afield. Usually this is by car. We have to take lots of her paraphernalia with us. What we take depends on the type of show. Sometimes she can go ready dressed, but sometimes she has to go to rehearse, and then after a few hours of this will have to change for the actual show.
For some of these shows, and especially for competitions, I always encourage her to dress well and look the part. I think if you want to do well you should show that you are prepared to make an effort, taking pride in being well groomed. She has gradually built up quite a nice collection of pretty dresses. Not usually extra expensive as we look out for sale bargains, but all the same dresses that deserve looking after.
I found that we were always using carrier bags of assorted sizes. I started to think that these looked scruffy and also didn't keep her clothes in good condition. I decided to buy a decent bag for her to use for make-up and any bits and pieces necessary for a young hopeful. I thought I would look for a dress, or garment carrier for her dresses.
I saw in my old favourite Argos that they were selling three garment hangers for the price of, £7.99. The three carriers were of varying size. I was mainly interested in the dress bag but thought the others might come in useful.
I reserved these on the Argos site, using their click and collect service. I collected them shortly after. As they were sold at quite a reasonable price I didn't expect too much, just something that would do the job they were bought for.
On opening I thought they smelled plasticky; too much so for ca pleasant car journey, and so I hung them out in the garden for a while. This improved them but the smell did still linger, so I sprayed them with Febreze which I found did help.
We soon had call to use the dress bag for a competition. My daughter was entered in two solo sections and was going to wear a prom type dress for these. She was also entered in three group musical theatre numbers where she had to wear a different costume for each. Obviously we had a lot to take. Well, somehow I got the job of being the wardrobe mistress. My bed was heaped with clothes. I managed to fit the prom dress, along with a dress for a group number, onto two separate hangers, and then put the hanger hook through the hole in the top. This is ideal as then it could hang up while I sorted out the rest of her outfit, while she instructed. We used one of the smaller carriers for skirts and tops. These fitted quite nicely. We had room in both bags to put shoes in each. This now meant just taking one small holdall for make-up etc. instead of lots of carrier bags.
Also, my daughter tends to be disorganised and things get left behind. Mind you, she isn't the only one and, although I don't go back stage, I imagine it is chaos in the dressing room. I thought that these carriers would be less likely to be left behind than nondescript carrier bags. Up to now this seems to be the case.
These hangers zipped up okay, and helped to keep the clothes in a good condition. I don't think they will last that long but with the price I paid I don't expect too much.
They can hang in the car but, as my husband is the driver, he prefers that they are laid flat in the back of the car. However, for men wishing to use the suit carriers, these would probably be alright to hang vertically in the back of a car without any obstruction of view.
The only problem is that the dress carrier is not that long. For a prom type knee length dress it's ideal but, for a longer length dress it would require folding the bottom. I have since bought two dress carriers which cost about two pounds each. These are made from a canvas type material and are of a longer length. The canvas type bags are preferable for keeping long dresses crease free but, if the weather is wet then the Argos carrier is best, as it affords some protection against the rain.
For the purpose I purchased these carriers for I'm content with them. I find they are as expected and good for the price.
