Cath Kidston Book Bag
Advantages: Quirky and attractive design, good size for study folder, waterproof and sturdy, good strap length
Disadvantages: Perhaps a tad expensive
I have rather a thing for Cath Kidston fabrics - I find the old fashioned, rather kitsch floral designs rather beautiful. My mum knows this, and for a housewarming gift when I moved, rather than risk giving me some decorative item I might not like, or a practical item I might already have, she gave me a Cath Kidston book bag, which I was delighted to receive.
The shape of the bag is as you see above, rectangular with straps made of the same patterned fabric as the bag. However, there are a range of fabric designs, and I don't have the floral one pictured above. You see, in dress sense I'm something of a tomboy, and as stunning at the floral designs are, a floral book bag would seem rather incongruous with my every day wear. My mum, knowing this, picked me out a bag in an unusual cowboy fabric (I wasn't aware Cath Kidston did anything other than florals), and rather than just being a cotton bag, mine is made from printed oilcloth, which makes it water proof, and in my mind at least also makes it a little tougher.
The fabric shows cowboys in a variety of poses - a red shirted cowboy sits on his haunches, his serape rolled behind him, looking off into the distance where you can see a farming cabin and a large cactus. Meanwhile, a cowboy in a mustard yellow shirt in galloping at full speed on his horse, his lasso twirling above his head, and another red shirted cowboy practices twirling his lasso next to his covered wagon. It's an action packed design, with plenty of detail - you can see the expression on the yellow shirted cowboy face, the muscles of the horse captured in movement, and you can almost hear the hooves beating down on the ground behind you. And of course, just below the handle, the recognizable Cath Kidston logo is stitched on. There is a small pocket inside the bag near the top - it doesn't have any zip or fasten on it, so I wouldn't use it, for example, for my wallet or my phone, as it doesn't seem very secure, although I do tend to pop my bus ticket in here if I'm out and about.
The straps on the bag are in the same fabric, and they are long enough to enable this to be worn as a shoulder bag. The bag measures 33 x 38cm, and the stitching throughout is nice and tidy.
I find the bag a good size for holding a text book and my notes if I'm going to the library to work on my course (I could work from home, but I work better without distractions) as well as a pencil case and a small dictionary. It will hold an a4 folder easily, and can even hold a smaller laptop. I also tend to use it when I might need a larger handbag - for example, on train journeys, as it easily fits in all the stuff I use day to day, as well as books and magazines to read, and a roll for lunch.
The fabric, being oilcloth, has a slight glossy shine to it. I do think this doesn't look as nice, finish wise, as the ordinary cotton cloths, but it certainly is more practical, and is very hard wearing. I've been caught out in the rain several times and (thankfully) this has helped keep my work dry. It's also had a couple of things spill inside it, but was easy to wipe clean, although sadly not without a little bit of staining on the inside. It's also been dragged along the floor by my daughter a couple of times, but hasn't really sustained any damage, which I'm happy about.
This bag (still available for £18) is lovely. It's probably not something I would have purchased for myself, having not been aware of the existence of non-floral patterns, but I really do like it. £18 is a little more than I would normally pay for a bag, but I suppose in this case you're paying for the name. I would normally begrudge that, but I've actually received several compliments on my bag, so I won't moan too much about it this time. Overall, a wonderful and much appreciated gift, that gets used on an almost daily basis.
Summary: A lovely bag used almost daily.
