I spend a lot of time outdoors and needed a bag to carry my essentials in while hiking. As I was only planning to use the bag for walks in the woods I wasn't that bothered about what it looked like or whether or not it would make me look "cool" but I did need it to be small and compact, leave my hands free and still have room for the essentials such as my phone, wallet, keys and digital camera. After a search on Amazon I kept coming back to this bag by Eastpak. I was attracted by the brand as my other Eastpak bag is great quality and they are well known for making practical, durable outdoor bags. The price of £40 did put me off a bit but as I had a voucher I decided to give it a go anyway.
--- The Look ---
There are a wide variety of different colours and designs available. I opted for the simple plain black one although it also comes in Pili Pili Red, Square Red, Tyvek White, Blow Up Blue and Built to Resist (black with white writing). The bag is made is a strong, waterproof canvas-like material and consists of one main compartment inside as well as a smaller front zip-up pocket and an adjustable shoulder strap.
--- Functionality ---
I am really impressed with both the durability and the practicality of this bag. I've gotten a lot of use out of it since buying it. The main 17L compartment is surprisingly spacious and easily accommodates all of my essentials with room to spare. Moreover there is also a key clip inside as well as a smaller zip pocket which I use for small change. I've never actually used the key clip as the zips all feel really secure which reassures me that nothing is likely to fall out. The front pocket is the perfect size for a phone or wallet and again the zip feels nice and secure and fastens smoothly. The thickness of the strap combined with the lightweight bag makes it comfortable to wear for hours at a time and you can adjust it to the perfect length for easily opening the bag to grab something.
The material itself is really strong and the bag is well-made like most Eastpak products. Although I've only had the bag a few months there are no signs of wear yet. The colour is just as good as new with no signs of fading and at the moment the material is free of scuff marks or fraying.
--- Summary ---
This is a brilliant bag. It may not make you look particularly good but in a practical sense it is very convenient with lots of roomy pockets, secure zips and is comfortable to carry. I've gotten a lot of use out of this bag and so I think the cost is worth it for such a high-quality product and I would definitely recommend.
My girlfriend got this bag for one of our trips abroad. It is named a unisex bag but I can't see myself using this unless asked to by my girlfriend. It not to my taste and I think It suits girls/ladies more. She wanted a bag that she could easily carry around with her on holiday with the room to hold all kinds of essentials such as phone, keys and purse without the risk of using and damaging one of her expensive handbags. The Eastpak Unisex Hobbs Shopper bag was the obvious choice as it seemed to be the size and have the space required for our trip and we both saw Eastpak as a well-known brand for outdoor/adventure bags.
The bag comes with a black strap the fits comfortably over the shoulder. The bag itself holds 17L and is plenty of room for a days' worth of necessities and more. It has a few useful additions including a clip where you can attach your keys or a camera which is great for anyone who gets paranoid. On the front of the bag is a large pocket with a zip for opening and closing. This is of good size and has plenty of room for a wallet or a mobile phone. At the back is a smaller pocket which is great for holding loose change. The main part of the bag is again held together with a zip and inside are numerous handy pockets including a large Velcro pocket where I keep my sunglasses in.
The bag can come in a number of colours. We have a bright blue version but I remember seeing a red version and a glossy black one too. We paid £18 for the bag and found it great value. In other shops I have seen the bag as expensive as £35 and have seen on comparison websites as low as £14 so it is definitely worth shopping around.
We have taken the bag on over 5 trips abroad taking it through jungles and to many beaches. It has a thick and tough plasticy material that takes all kinds of abuse. It is easy to keep clean as well, just wipe down with a damp cloth. Over the couple of years of owning the bag the zips still work well and there is no sign of fraying or bobbles on the material.
All in all a great bag that is very practical for trips.
As far as unisex items go, this bag is definitely not for my boyfriend. He may carry it when I ask him to but on the whole, he would never go out and buy a bag such as this. It is rather a perfect bag through for walking as it is less cumbersome than a backpack but still has quite a lot of room into for those essential items, such as a waterproof jacket, phone, camera and purse. I like the bag mainly because it is so versatile and can be worn across the body or straight over the shoulder.
Eastpax are a well known brand and specialise in urban style bags for outdoor lovers. They originally made military issue backpacks so they must know a thing or do about making practical bags.
*Price and availability*
I have seen this bag priced for £15.00 all the way up to £40.00! The bag stays the same but every season they tend to bring it out in a new colour or new style. The newer bags seem to have a sort of wet look effect and come in a variety of bright colours and black. I have the black wet look one and paid £20.00 in the sale. This seemed a really reasonable price and I bought it from a local camping store. Amazon are currently stocking it for £30.00.
The bag has a capacity for 17L, this is perfect for a day trip as I can fit in all the necessities; tissues phone, map etc and even fit in a waterproof jacket. The bag is not waterproof though, so when it is raining I usually wear my mac on top of the bag with it tucked under my arm. The bag is really comfortable to wear due to the shape as it fits neatly against the contours of your arm or back. The strap is adjustable for comfort too.
The bag has clip for your keys, which I tend not to use as it is quite fiddly to get them on and off and I do not have that much patience! On the exterior of the bag there is a large zippered pocket on the front which will accommodate a number of small items such as mobile phone or ipod and purse and at the back there is a smaller zippered pocket. Inside the main body of the bag which is also fastened closed with a zip there is another large internal pocket that fastens with vecro. I love it that there are so many pockets as it means that it is easy to find what you are looking for and everything is always to hand.
The bag is really good quality and is made from thick material that will not bobble or be damaged easily. Due to the bag being given the 'wet' look, it is easy to wipe clean if you spill a little bit on it. My boyfriend dropped an ice cream on mine and it wiped clean off. You can also put the bag in the washing machine to wash it. I always put it in a pillow case first to protect the machine from all the zips. These zips have a little bit of rope attached so they are easy to pull closed and they all appear to be quite robust and sturdy.
If you don't want a rucksack but you want a bag for day trips, this is perfect. It is a nice size to work with and it looks good too. I'd recommend this bag.
I'm not one to carry a bag unless absolutely necessary, I prefer to travel light. I usually only carry my bank card upon my person if I go out alone. However, now that I have a little boy, I can't get away with travelling quite so light. I do try to get away with taking out as little as possible, most of the time we are quite close to home, as we live central to everything and neither my partner nor I drive.
Now that my son is an active toddler we try to get out and about to visit as many interesting places as possible whenever the weather is permitting, as I'm not one to spend time walking round shops frequently. Shopping certainly isn't something that is interesting for children especially on a regular basis. We frequent the nearby museums and parks whenever the opportunity arises, so in these instances it was apparent that I needed a bag to be able to take a picnic and any other necessities that we may require for a day out.
I didn't want a bag that was cumbersome; I wanted something that wouldn't be bigger than needed. I also wanted a bag that I could wash easily, as toddlers are sticky little creatures. Another requirement that the bag needed was a sensible shoulder strap so I could wear the bag across my body, as I have to be quite active with my little boy, so I didn't want something that would slide around or fall off my shoulder. Oh, and another nice feature would be a separate zip compartment for wet T-shirts and the likes. So, I'm not asking for much, just a bag that can meet my demands.
Amazon is my favourite place to shop, I can search for what I need and find it within a few clicks of my mouse. Hassle free shopping, and I am able to find products that I had no idea existed. After performing a search on Amazon, I had a quick look through the bags and I noticed a bag by Eastpak which was highly rated, so I had a look at what they had to offer in their range, after seeing a few that looked like what I was after, I decided to look at any other reviews I could find to see if they were as good as the first, and I was happy to see that they were. I decided to have a closer look at the range, and I was pleased to see that a few were on offer, as they are not particularly cheap.
>>> What a lot of Bags
The Eastpak range is quite extensive, they have every style of bag imaginable, from backpacks, shoulder bags, shopping bags, messenger bags, to travel bags. After browsing through the assortment of bags on offer, I had narrowed my options down to a couple of choices, and after much thought I opted for the Adult Hobbs Shopper, which is available in a few different colours, I plumped for the Poly Verde, as I liked the neon green and blue pattern. This bag also looked like it would meet my requirements, and I was hoping that it would be just what I wanted. These bags retail at £30, however, I paid a fraction of the retail price, as they happened to be on offer at the time of purchase. I would have hesitated at £30, having said that though, but they do come with a 30 year guarantee, which is highly impressive.
On delivery I was immediately impressed with my purchase, the bag looked practical and it has a feel of quality to it. It is the perfect size for my needs, and it is incredibly lightweight, as the entire bag is constructed from a thin material that feels robust, and it has no extra padding. It features a large double zip along the top that has material hooks to bring them together easily. It also supports an adjustable shoulder strap that has a good amount of leverage to allow you to adjust it to your preferred length. There is a generous outside zipped pocket which is ideal for keeping all of the essential necessities in the front of the bag, and there is an open pocket on the outer reverse of the bag, which is handy for non valuable items. The main compartment is nice and spacious and it features an inside pocket with a Velcro fastener, in addition to this there is a pen loop, and a key clip.
>>> How Much Can I fit in Here
On my first excursion with my new bag, I was really pleased that everything I needed fitted neatly into it, and the zip compartments were ideal to separate certain items, and keep everything neat and easily accessible. The bag feels lightweight and is comfortable to wear, and carrying the bag across the body means that the weight is evenly distributed. The outer pocket is incredibly useful, as I can find the items I need quickly and easily. This is also an ideal pocket to use to store wet T-shirts, or any rubbish that I accumulate throughout the day, until I can find a bin to dispose of it.
As the bag has no liner and it has a smooth underside and rounded corners it means it sits comfortably against the body. I am able to load the bag up with all manner of items and it will hold a fair weight without looking strained, and it maintains its shape even with bulky items. The material is durable, and it is also water repellent, so goods within will remain dry when out in wet weather. The compact design means I can pull the bag around so it sits across the front of my body in a vertical position, which is handy for when we are in enclosed busy places such as on trains, escalators, and in busy towns. I find this useful as I know that everything is close to my body and out of the way of passersby, so I need not worry about knocking my bag against anyone, and that my belongings will be safe.
The slim design and the large opening to the main compartment makes it easy to find what I want with ease, which is essential with an eager toddler. I can also swing the bag around to my back with no difficulty, so that I am able to bend down to my son's level and tend to him without the bag being obtrusive. I never have the need to take the bag off whilst out and about, as it is easy to manoeuvre it from my front to back, or have it positioned on my hip, and when I need to sit down it fits comfortably over my lap. As the bag is unisex and quite trendy my partner is happy to take a share in carrying it, and he will use it for his own needs.
I absolutely love this bag; I cannot fault it at all. It has had a high amount of use over the last year, in all weather. It is the only bag we use for day trips, as it is the ideal size, and it is practical and hard wearing. Despite the high amount of use, and tugging from my little boy, it still looks in new condition, which I am delighted with. The colour is as vibrant as it was when I first received it, and there is no wear or tear to the bag whatsoever. The zips are strong and they glide open smoothly. It is easy to care for, as it can easily be washed in warm soapy water by hand, and line dried, and as it is quite small and thin it takes little effort. I must confess that mine does end up in the machine on a gentle wash, and it hasn't come to any harm, as most machines are capable of washing delicates nowadays. However, to maintain the waterproofing properties it is advisable to wash it by hand. The price tag on this bag may seem a little steep, however, I can say that it is worth every penny, as it is a good quality bag that will see many years use.
