O.k. first off I would never have even considered buying a Maxwell Scott holdall/travel bag because they have such a hefty price tag, you're looking at between £350-£500 depending on the size. That isn't to say that I don't like these bags, I think they are gorgeous and would have loved to have had one. So you can imagine my delight (and jealousy) when my other hald received one of these for his 30th birthday, with a tag saying it was about time he had something grown-up to travel with now he was officially an adult. Suffice to say I think I have used it as much as he has since he received it.
The bag itself is handcrafted from luxurious Italian leather and feels so silky smooth, I could probably spend a good deal of time just stroking it. There are two zips that go almost all the way around, making it both accessible for packing and secure, because you can padlock the two zips together. It has one big compartment inside, that has plenty of room for enough clothes for two people for an overnight trip or one person for a weekend. There are two straps that go over the zips and buckle closed and make the bag feel very sophisticated and make it more difficult for opportunists to just quickly unzip and dip their hands in. The handles are like the finest Italian leather belts (although they do want to be for the price) and are very sturdily secured on the bag, and we've managed to get the bag really full and very heavy and they don't seem to be straining under the weight.
All in all I think this bag is lovely, it's very luxurious and very expensive for what it is and I don't think I would have bought one myself. However, I really do like it and I think it will probably last us for a good many years yet and for that reason I suppose it's not a vast amount of money to spend on a piece of luggage!
I won this bag in an incentive at work. I was told I had won a Maxwell Scott Bag and to be honest I was not really overjoyed as I had never heard of Maxwell Scott (I must be a simpleton). I rang my girlfriend and she made it clear to me that what I had won would be top of the range and stylish. I did a bit of googleing and discovered it sold for between £300 to £400 pounds this is when I became quite excited about winning such a bag. Personally I could not believe a bag could be so expensive (I thought it must have been made of unicorn leather or something).
When I first received the bag I instantly adored it. It was beautiful. Crafted from brown leather it gave off a fashionable, stylish look and had a great real leather aroma. The leather itself has a surprisingly soft feel but is extremely strong keeping your items inside secure. When I carry the bag I feel like a real city gent. It has a luxury chocolate colour and beams class.
In regards to size it is not big enough to take on a week worth of clothes on holiday. I mainly use it on short city trips for work where I am away for two or three days. I have also used it as a gym bag as it is a great size for a towel, trainers and gym kit. The handles of the bag are strong but the soft leather make it easy on the hands to carry.
For me the bag has been reliable, sturdy and robust. Its main asset is the way it looks and would be great for anyone who has a passion for fashion. Saying this I could never see myself spending so much money on what is essentially a bag (maybe I am just a stingy old bean).
Although I had never heard of the Maxwell Scott brand in the past I did a little research into price and quality of their products when a friend offered me the chance to buy their Maxwell Scott Leather Holdall from them. They were planning a once in a lifetime trip around the world, and wanted to sell a few items to partly pay for the trip. When my friend offered me the holdall for £100 I didn't know whether it was a fair price or not, so I did a little internet browsing for answers.
The prices I have seen online are upwards of £300, so I feel I got a bit of a bargain, especially considering the holdall was less than a year old, though it had seen many corners of the globe already in all fairness. Handcrafted in the finest Italian leather the bags really are built to last and the quality craftmanship put into them leaves you with something quite special. The medium size is £389.99 direct from www.maxwellscottbags.com and the large is £427.99. I have the medium bag, though it is very spacious indeed. If I am going away for the day with my family then this bag comes in very handy. It has one main compartment which can hold a good deal of things, such as my picnic and beach items.
The Maxwell Scott Leather Holdall comes in classic tan, dark chocolate and night black. I have the classic tan colour, which is the one in the dooyoo picture. The holdall has two zips on it, which can be padlocked together for security reasons if they are to be stowed in the hold during a flight, or just for if you are carrying anything expensive. The zip also runs all the way down both sides of the holdall for that extra bit more accessibility. There are two straps which run all the way around the holdall and are very much like belts as they have typical belt style buckles on them, which is a neat touch. The quality is clear to see, with the strong Italian leather and I also like the fact that the leather is a little bit worn as I find it adds character to the look. There are 'D' eyes on either end of the holdall to allow you to fix the strap to it for easier carrying, or you can simple use the strong leather handles which are lined with suade for grip and comfort. The handles are comfortable to hold and even if i have a full holdall I don't find them uncomfortable at all. The brass detailing such as the zips, buckles and studs really sets the design off and I don't have a problem with the styling at all. There are also brass finished feet to the underside of the holdall.
I have never had any complaints with the holdall and wouldn't change it for anything else when it comes to a hardy travelling bag. Nothing really comes close to it for either functionality or practicality - and certainly not for style!
If you are wishing to compare this holdall to other luggage cases you may be considering then the vital statistics are as follows;
These stats were taken directly from the aforementioned website. I wouldn't let the weight put you off, as although this may seem quite heavy, it is a big medium size, so it will accomodate a reasonable amount of holiday things or just general travel items such as beach towels and a change of clothes.
I keep going on about quality, but I just love the feel of the Italian leather and this is the real selling point, along with the design. You don't spend £389.99 on something that you don't like the look of, which is what you are effectively paying for - quality and style. This is a fashion statement, but it is also a very robust and practical one. Look at this as an investment, it really will last you many years and the stylish looks will never age.
I first thought this bag was way out of my price range, but on seeing on in real life, I knew I had to get it. Though it is marketed towards men, it's just the kind of vintage look I really love, and I think many who love this sort of style will be impressed by the simple elegance of the design and the great look of it.
It does seem to be quite an extravagance for what is essentially a travel bag, and therefore not going to be used that often, but that said, I suppose if you're the type of person to be jetting off regularly, it might be worth investing in something that is reliable and sturdy. Also, I think it compares in size to the current fashion for massive bags, so it might not even look too out of the ordinary as a work bag.
The strong leather and secure straps means it is also great to take outdoors. I've used this bag on picnics and down to the beach, and while I'm sure that's not what the designers intended, it has been a very useful size for that as well! Fits in a few beach towels and essentials :)
The leather itself is surprisingly soft, considering how much emphasis is made for the security of the bag, and it has a great sized handle, so no rubbing on the hands. I do think it is a very unisex bag, suitable for men or women, as it is strong and spacious but also soft and stylish, in a more neutral milk chocolate brown than many bags of this nature.
I had bought this bag for my ex boyfriend when we were going out and heading to Brussels for a long romantic weekend as a birthday present.
I have heard from many that the quality of Maxwell Scott is highly recommended and that the leather is tough as well as soft.
They boast "Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale" which translates a "Italian vegetable tanned leather" meaning that the hide itself has not been chemically treated and therefore not bad for the environment and it is a sustainable process in treating the leather.
The bag in the photo is the "Flero" hold all and is the medium size however they all sizes do look very similar as they all have the two belted straps across the middle. It also comes in 3 colours of brown, black and dark brown across the range. I chose the light brown version as it goes with all outfits really.
All the bags come with a lifetime guarantee and for looking so beautiful and stylish it is quite rugged and hard waring but I suppose to achieve it to be hard waring you can buy their leather care products to keep the leather soft and from cracking and being marked, just like you would do with good and much loved leather shoes.
This medium bag fit a good 4 days worth of clothes and toiletries and such for my boyfriend and it just rounded off his "sophisticated" European look he was going for at the time.
It was very pricey at £370 I think the price I paid for it- Maxwell Scott is quite an exclusive brand so it is quite difficult to find in department stores and high street shops so it is best to go directly to their website or luggage specialists like BOROS. To be fair I don't think it is fair that this bag has been particularly aimed at men as girls can look just as good with it! It should be unisex!
I used to think that man bags were a little lame and he looked poncy but this leather bag is so nicely made, it looks classical more than silly (think 1940s suave) and I know that even though we have parted company this bag will see him through for many years to come (even though I wanted the damn thing, its so good, he won't give it back!)
I have had the pleasure of dealing with Maxwell Scott twice now and I am constantly impressed by the service received.
I first bought from Maxwell Scott a couple of years ago. I was looking for a leather bag for my wife's birthday and came across this company. I was impressed by the positive feedback and the quality of the leather sounded great so I decided to purchase. I was initially a little disappointed as after buying online I was told that the handbag was out of stock, however I was phoned within the half hour and told, and re assured that everything is handmade in Italy thus I would have to wait, cancel my order or get an alternative handbag. I decided to wait as my wife wanted a specific style and didn't mind getting it late! I was also given a gift letter to give to her which stated the item and was perfect as she then had something to open on the day.
The handbag arrived 2 weeks later and was well worth the wait, my wife was incredibly pleased.
I ordered a Medium flero luggage bag a few weeks ago and was again impressed. The item was in stock and came to me the very next day free of charge! The quality is superb and the attention to detail outstanding. I was told each item comes with a lifetime guarantee so if I ever have a problem with it I can send it back and get it fixed free of charge!
The luggage bag is perfect for a weekend trips and we often go to the country side so this is ideal for that! It is fast becoming my favourite accessory; my wife is trying to steal it too!
I definitely recommend this company if you are looking for quality leather goods and great customer service. I will be buying from them again in the future!
