Oakley Large Roller
Advantages: lots of pockets
Disadvantages: top heavy and falls over
A twin centre holiday is superb, especially when you get to balance out the hustle and bustle of a city visit with a beach break. We had three nights in New York then 3 nights in Miami and it was one of the best holidays we ever had. As we were travelling to a nice place, we decided that we should buy another bag and in the sale we came across this Oakley roller duffle bag that can hold 10 gallons. It is huge and we managed to pick it up at a really decent price. We have one good bag for holidays but we usually have to borrow a relic from my parents; it was time we treated ourselves to a new bag. Luggage is just one of those things that you don't want to spend too much money on as it only usually makes an appearance a couple of times a year and there are always more important things to spend money on; the holiday in the first place for a start!
==Price and availability==
This bag comes with a choice of colours, from experience I would go for the darkest colour there is! The bag costs £130 - £140 when I have just done a quick comparison on the internet. We bought it from the designer outlet in York for £85 and we thought it was a really good reduction for a well known brand name and a high quality bag.
==Description and opinion==
We bought the bag in grey which was a mistake because as soon as it came off the conveyer belt in JFK it had a big filthy black streak running down the middle, marvellous! We did manage to sponge it off in the end with some hand soap at the hotel room so that was good, however it did make me think about the fabric. It is made from strong polyester graded 600D and it can hold up against bumps and grazes but it is not waterproof and it does mark easily. The dimensions of the bag are 22" L x 14" W x 9" H and it is 45 litres in capacity. It is more than sufficient for a single person trip for a week to ten days. I checked this bag in and I also had a smaller bag as hand luggage. I think that you would be able to check this in as hand luggage though as long as you do not over fill it.
At the back of the bag is a telescoping handle that pulls and pushes out with ease. At the back is a flat pocket that is very roomy and perfect for documents or other small items. The bag has wheels that are balanced and set on smooth rolling cartridge bearings and it is easy to pull it though the airport and even onto the streets. The main section of the bag is closed with two heavy duty zips and these meet in the middle or at the sides and can be secured with a padlock. Although one is not supplied with the bag and you have to source your own.
The fact that the case opens in the middle flat out like a suitcase, it is easy to remove items and easy to pack. Inside the bag is an interior mesh slip pocket and interior mesh divider with zip. These are perfect for toiletries or underwear and it depends whether you are checking the bag in as to where you put things. There is also a handy exterior top access compartment with a zip and this is perfect for either dirty laundry or for toilettes. I stuffed my dirty stuff in here and it made it much tidier in the hotel room. To keep your things separate there is also exterior flap pockets and slip pockets with Velcro closures. These are great for your miscellaneous items; there really is a pocket for everything.
==Carrying and comfort==
To carry the bag you can pull it on the handle and there is also a little tug handle at the top of the case. At the sides there are two compression clips that help reduce the bulkiness of the bag. There is a lot of give in the fabric and these really do help compact it, although when checking the bag there is not that much of a problem. In terms of comfort, the fabric handle is padded and the plastic framed handle is rounded so it is comfortable to hold. The push down release button is at the top so there is no chance of it being accidently activated. The bag is great and it really is good quality but the downside is that although it has wheels, it does not have a stand so unless you are holding on to the bag it topples over! This was hard when we had it on the subway and I had to hold on to the bag as well as the moving carriage! We tried to repack it at the hotel to distribute the weight more but this did nothing at all and the bag is just generally top sided no matter how you pack it.
This is a great bag in terms of what you can fit into the size and the quality of the zips and straps show that this is definitely a designer bag. Oakley have done a great job here but the big letdown is that is cannot stand up unaided. Sometimes you need to be able to not hold the bag but if you do then you have to lay it down, it is very frustrating. You would think that for the price they would do more tests on it. However, for the price this is a long lasting bag and with so many pockets it is the perfect way for fuss free, organised travel.
