Hi fellow travellers, Here is a story to shock you and make you avoid Columbus Direct like the plague. We took out our annual travel insurance and decided on Columbus Direct because it looked ok and a decent price. Well Oh my what a Mistake to make. We had our camera equipment stolen in Canada, we contacted the police twice and they were fantastic and investiaged and did all the reports. Anyway contacted Columbus Direct on the day it happened ( 5th of September 2008 ) we recieved a claims form through email immediately. So we proceeded to fill it all out an continue with our holiday safe in the knowledge that we would be sorted out with our insurance company. How foolish of us. Today the 14th Of October 2008 we still had NOT heard back from Columbus direct so I called them. I got some smug unhelpfull member of Columbus direct who proceeded to tell me smuggly to read the small print and that they do not cover theft from a car even though item was locked in the trunk. It was taken them now close to 6 weeks and we have had NO letter saying this and worse still we have not had any of our receipts or police reports returned. We have now contacted our M & S house insurance who very helpfully are now looking into it. The conclusion in our eyes is that COLUMBUS DIRECT ARE THIEFS and have taken our money under false pretense, I would pay a bit more from a reputable Insurance company and save yourself heartache.

If this this saves one person we have done our job

Regards
B & V

Summary: Pay for a Decent Insurance company - NOT Thiefs like Columbus Direct

Unfortunately you are in the wrong here (I do not work for Columbus Direct, just have read the terms and conditions).

U nder Section 8 - Baggage, under "Not Covered":

"valuables left in a motor vehicle (other than motor homes, provided the valuables are stored out of view);"

V aluables under the definitions of the policy are (which include your camera equipment):

&q uot;Jewellery, watches, Cameras, photographic apparatus, binoculars, video equipment, mobile telephones and any audio or audiovisual equipment including (but not limited to): tape recorders, cassettes and players, radios, compact discs and players, minidiscs and players, portable media players, computers and accessories, video games and TV sets, prescribed medication."

For anyone taking out an insurance policy, you have to read all the terms and conditions. Legally you wouldn't have a leg to stand on if the claim does not meet the right criteria.
