Advantages: Cheaper than most, WONDERFUL!

Disadvantages: Slightly higher than normal excess.

Yes, you know the one. The one with the ad's with the St.Bernard dog you see on the tube.

Well, I'm glad to say I had a more than pleasant experience with Columbus travel insurance..... but then that's perhaps because it wasn't me that needed it, it was my girlfriend!

We were on holiday in Bulgaria, skiing. Unfortunately on the 5th day of our 7 day holiday, she fell and snapped the ligaments in her knee. That's an entirely different story, but..... I took our documents to the doctor en piste and one call to Columbus and that was it! It was all paid for and sorted, they exchanged faxes with the doctor etc. and all was paid for. All I had to do was pay a small excess, which you get with all insurers. That said, Columbus's 'small excess' is slightly less small than others, but then the insurance is the same amount cheaper than the rest, so if you don't have a clumsy girlfriend, you make a saving!

Everything was organised wonderfully. We had a delightful 'porter' waiting for us at Sofia airport, who checked in our bags, whizzed us through customs (aforesaid girlfriend was being pushed in a wheelchair) and the guy even wanted to carry her into the plane!

Then at the other end, Heathrow, another porter collected her on an electric cart and whizzed her through customs at the other end, leaving me to carry all the bags I hasten to add! Then, an enourmous chaufeur driven car collected us and drove us to our house. Quite a joy when compared to the thought of going on the tube with a 'one-legged' girlfriend!

Columbus were marvelous. All this was organised at the drop of a hat, no questions asked and all from one 'phone call.
