      Direct Travel's offer not fulfilled

      DIRECT TRAVEL = DON'T TRUST!
We were due to travel back to the UK in April and caught by the volcanic ash problems. As a teacher, with examination classes and exams imminent, I felt a responsibility to get back as soon as possible, and we had to make alternative arrangements, getting a flight to an open airport and then trains (coaches all booked up), cheap as possible overnight stops, and finally ferry. A smug email from Direct Travel said that they would 'pay claims from customers that are either stranded abroad or cannot travel due to the volcanic ash. Many travel insurance policies do not cover such situations but, in light of these extraordinary circumstances, we are treating this as an adverse weather event. This means that you can submit a claim for Delayed departure, Abandonment or Missed departure if you have been affected.'
Back in the UK, we filled in the claim forms and sent off the receipts - only to be offered £100 each as 'cover' for the time we were delayed, but nowhere near the amount of expense we had incurred.
DT - Disillusioned Traveller - don't take out a policy with this insurer. We certainly will not be renewing our policy with them!

Although they accepted the medical claim (after a week in hospital in Vietnam) they have not made any settlement or acknowledged my claim for 3 months. All telephone call and e-mails are ignored. They do however send me customer satisfaction questionnaires!I am several thousand pounds out of pocket and was left ill in a distant country, in hospital with none of the promised assistance.Steer well clear!

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      My preferred travel insurance company.

For the past three years I have been purchasing travel insurance online from Direct Travel Insurance. Their website can be found at www.direct-travel.co.uk or you can ring direct on 0845 605 2700.

Prior to purchasing my travel insurance from here I had always just taken out the insurance recommended to me by the travel agent or website, not realising that I could save myself some money if I shopped around and purchased it myself.
The realisation came when I was browsing through cashback offers on a favourite cashback site of mine : Topcashback.co.uk which gives you cashback on many online purchases.
It was there I noticed that various travel insurance was available online which also gave you a little cashback too.

Intrigued, I looked up Direct Travel Insurance which was one of the few available. They had good feedback from customers on the cashback site which also gave me reassurance about purchasing online.

Direct Travel Insurance were established in 1993. Since then, they claim to have insured 8m people and provided winter sports travel insurance for 1.4m skiers. Their policies include up to £20m medical cover and offer a variety of options. Single trip cover and annual travel insurance for holidays and business travel is available. Also a wide variety of sports and activities can also be covered and policies can be tailored to suit your individual needs - meaning lower premiums and the best-fitting cover.

Their website I found to be well laid out and very easy to use. I have recently been booking single trip cover for my summer holiday this year and it really is very simple. The whole process taking only a couple of minutes.
Clicking on single trip insurance brings up a box with drop-down selections, where you select the dates of your holiday, the area you are travelling to and how many adults, children etc are travelling. After submitting your details the prices and different levels of cover are shown.
There are 3 types of standard cover and a Premier Plus option. The prices ranged from £16.25 - £36.00 for my trip. £16.25 gives you medical expenses, personal accident and liability cover and loss of passport. The next two standard cover options offer the same cover, plus cancellation cover, loss of money and possessions.
The premier plus option includes all of those plus concierge service and scheduled airline failure. Full details of all the cover is provided for each option, so you can decide which is best for your needs.

Each time I have purchased cover it has been quick and without problems. I paid with my bank card and received email confirmation right away. I have also been impressed by the speed at which they sent out my documents. They arrived the next day the last time I purchased cover, which is great service. Individual insurance cards arrived plus a pack containing full information on my cover.

I have literally paid half the price for my travel insurance than I used to when purchasing at the travel agents and actually received a better level of cover for my money.
Of course there is the added cashback bonus too. By going through Topcashback I received 17.5% cashback, which is still available now. My cashback tracked quickly and I received it with no problems.

Of course, you never know how good an insurance company actually are until you make a claim. And whilst thankfully I have never had any major problems on holiday I did have a minor one, which resulted in me ringing the phone number provided for help and advice.
I was very pleased with the help and advice I received. My problems were dealt with quickly and ensured I could carry on my holiday without any worries. If they deal with major problems in the same way, then I cannot recommend them highly enough.

Direct Travel Insurance also offer a service called 'Holiday Extras' which assists you to find and book airport hotels and parking. They offer this service with a Best Price Guarantee, where if you find the same products for less within seven days of booking, Holiday Extras will match the price or refund the difference.
I haven't used the Holiday Extras service, but it is handy to know you can purchase insurance and book some extras all on the same site.

The site also provides you with Country guides. These contain all the useful information you may need to know about visiting a certain country or area. Risk ratings and recent alerts are all featured on the site as well as checklists on what to do before you travel.

I am very happy with the cover, price and service I have received from Direct Travel Insurance over the last three years and have no hesitation in recommending them for travel insurance.
The website is easy to use and their service gets full marks from me. They are definitely worth taking a look at if you are needing travel insurance and with the added cashback incentive you could find yourself making quite a saving!

        Dont use...Be warned

I HAD been insured with direct travel insurance for 5 years. I had one previous claim in 2006 which was dealt with and settled promptly over the phone in a matter of minutes. However, in the intervening period, DIRECT TRAVEL INS. had changed their underwriter from AXA to AIG "Travel assist".
My son was ill while on holiday and I was, in communication with their travel assistance department at all times. I was told I would be covered for all expenses in relation to the claim (obviously minus the excess) (including a taxi to/from hospital as we did not have a hire car) I also asked what to do in relation to travelling to and from the pharmacy to collect my son's repeat medication. The nearest pharmacy was more than 3 miles away from where I was staying and I was also advised to claim for the cost of taxi transport to and from the pharmacy because it was classed as 'emergency transport'. It was only when I got back to the UK and submitted the claim that the problems started. AIG "Travel assist" rejected all the taxi claims and gave me an exchange rate for everything else which was more than 15% lower than the rate I actually paid. The difference was over £80, Fortunately, I had taken the names of all the people I had spoken to in AIG "Travel assist". It took a lengthy letter giving all the details /times and dates of conversations and attached copies of my bank and credit card statements to prove I was actually charged more than they paid me. Eventually afthe a few more phone calls to their premium rate "Help Line" they sent me an additional cheque for £73 (Still below what I actually paid out). Throughout the claim, they were very difficult to deal with and it was only my persistence that got me a settlement remotely close to my outlay (I am sure they base their business on the assumption that most people wouldn't bother to argue the case for a relatively small amount of money). To all people who are considering this company. make sure you 1) get verbal authorisation at all stages 2) Note the date/time and the person's full name 3) check your credit card statement to ensure you are paid the correct amount. I shall be using an different travel insurance company next time... BE WARNED!!

Reliable insurance that paid for all expenses

Recently made a claim due to infected misquito bites on my legs while in Crete. Attending doctor contacted Direct Travel, everything was straight forward from there on in. Claim paid in full, no problems. We paid the doctor our excess and everything else was taken care of through my claim. I even got a courtesy call on my return to make sure I was home and asked if I was well. The claim form was sent by post but I did not receive it. I phoned to inform them after a week or so from my return home and I was given the choice of having the form a emailed to me immediately for my convenience. Will definately buy from Direct Travel again. Highly recommend this company 100% satisfaction. The staff I dealt with were friendly and helpful and it felt like they really did respect and care about me.

We had a very poor experience with Travel Insurance Web when it came to making a claim. My wife suffered complications in early pregnancy and we had to cancel a trip. Travel Insurance Web eventualy rejected the claim on the basis that we knew she was pregnant when we booked the trip. It would have been nice to know when taking out the insurance that they view pregnancy as a pre-existing medical condition. If that wasn't possible, it would have been good if they told us at the beginning of the process - not 4 months (and countless communications) after we reported the cancellation. Keep awy from Travel Insurance Web. They advertise that they are cheap ... and they are.

Good value travel insurance, would recommend.

I used this Direct Travel Insurance for two years running for my travel insurance needs. They provided the cheapest quote for a reasonable range of services - all the essential medical stuff but slightly lacking a low excess in the package I chose. I uncovered them after reading a newspaper article and insurance comparison websites seemed to confirm the good value.

Paperwork and sign-up were quite straightforward. At one point I did have to claim for a camera I had broken on holiday and that was not a problem. I was sent a claim form which I filled out and sent back. I received replacement vouchers within a couple of weeks so no complaints about the processing time. However, it was not a complicated claim so I cannot vouch for how good they would be in such circumstances.

Unfortunately in the last year the price seemed to be slightly less competitive so I changed insurer, but they are certainly on my list for the future.

Do not even think to contact these people by phone or email. Those quotes are much higher than what you find online. Upgrading your policy is a rip off. Also-the discount you get to renew your policy is worse than simply taking out a complete new policy.So-great company-but avoid email/phone contact!

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

According to recent survey done by a reputable bank ...

        * one in three people suffer some kind of problem whilst on holiday
        * eight per cent had lost their luggage
        * six per cent had to cancel or cut short their holiday due to unforeseen circumstances
        * a number of people had personal items or their money stolen
        * eighteen per cent of people suffered a holiday disaster but could not claim because they had no insurance

So, knowing these statistics combined with the fact that my husband and I go on 4+ holidays a year, I decided to embark on finding us the best travel insurance we could at a reasonable rate.

But, what should I look for?

The Consumers’ Association recommends that you should have:

        * at least £1m of medical cover in Europe

        * at least £2m in the States and the rest of the world

        * at least £1,500 baggage and belongings cover - and watch out for policies which limit the amount you can claim for any one item. Check that the total covers you for what you’re actually taking abroad.

        * Personal liability of at least £1m, to cover you if you cause injury or damage

        * Compensation for trips which may be cancelled or curtailed – and the costs of getting you home in an emergency

A 24-hour emergency line, and cover for your legal costs

In the end we settled with Direct Travel Insurance Services that can be found at www.direct-travel.co.uk.

This excellent value, award winning travel insurance has several types of premiums to choose from. Some examples are:

Single Trip Premiums for 11-17 days Premier Plus Cover in the UK for a family is £22, Europe is £29, Worldwide excluding USA, Canada and the Caribbean is £66 and Worldwide including everywhere is £70

The best values I have found with Direct Travel is with the Annual Multi-trip Premiums. Some examples are as:

Individual- Premier World Wide- £74 per year

Couple or Family- Premier World Wide- £99 per year

Single Parent Family- Premier Worldwide- £94 per year

There are special cover features for the annual multi-trip policy.

        * Cover for a continuous 12 month period, with no limit to the number of trips you can make abroad during that time.

        * Can be taken out by companies or individuals for business and holiday travel abroad.

        * Premier and Premier Plus policies include winter sports cover- 17 days per individual trip, with no limit to the number of winter sports trips you can take

        * Covers with no limit to the number of trips you can make in a year

        * Includes independent travel for each member of the family

        * Coupe or family cover is provided for husband and wife (or common-law partner) together with ANY number of dependent children under 19 years of age or under 23 years of age if in a full time education.

Examples of its cover for the premier coverage are:

£10,000,000 for medical emergency, repatriation and associated expenses

        £2,000,000 for personal liability

        £4,000 for cancellation/curtailment

        £50,000 for legal advice

24 Hour Emergency Service telephone number

This is the 3rd year we have this insurance and we have been very happy with it. When you renew before the last date of your previous policy, you also get a £5 discount.

We have never had to use the policy, thankfully! However, my in-laws have the same policy and have had to use it on different occasions and have always been satisfied by the fair, quick and professional way in which their claims were handled.

To apply, you can call them up. They ask you questions regarding prior medical conditions and set up your policy for when you want it to begin. The first time we bought the insurance it only took about 15 minutes and the policy was in my hands within a day. You get assistance cards with the emergency number that you take with you on holiday (we keep them in our passport holders).

When you renew, it only takes about 5 minutes. It is fast and professional. Just what I need in my busy life!

You can also apply online which takes about 15 minutes as well. The online site is easy to navigate and quick. They give you instant quotes with ease.

I feel that the value for money for the multi-trip policy is EXCELLENT! I would definitely recommend Direct Travel Insurance.

I got raw fingers while surfing the insurance web sites to find the best insurance for our holiday to the United States for a family of 4. When I found this site I was very pleased with both the premium and the cover offered. Take care when you compare prices as the amount of cover varies, I found the Insurance I needed and bought an annual policy cheaper than many sites were offering for a one trip basis, the extra advantage of the annual International policy is that it also cover uk holidays of 2 nights pre booked accommodation. I had to telephone them them to check some points too and they were very pleasant, effcient and downright helpful. I paid over the phone and within 2 days the cover note was there and the very useful little insurance 'credit cards' for us to carry with us. In future this site will be the first one i check at renewal time and the one i can recommend to friends.

Last week I booked a holiday over the internet, it is for one week to Lanzarote in June. I booked the apartment over the internet but I booked my flights with a travel agent because I wanted transfers from my house to the airport included. I didn't take their holiday insurance as it would have cost £16 each, I know that's not too bad coming from a travel agent but I knew I would get cheaper if I tried. I found the site on the internet for direct travel insurance and quickly found out that it would only cost £9.50 per adult. It covers me and my husband for 8 days travel. This company is in partnership with Norwich Union, commercial union and General Accident, so they are well known names to trust. We will be covered if we lose our money up to the value of £500,or if anyone steals it from us. There is an excess of £50 that's if you haven't took out extra cover to cancel any excess. This is only for whilst you are travelling, which probably means whilst you are flying or making your way to the holiday destination. If you have more than £150 on you at once , I don't really understand this , but I presume it means whilst having a day out. You have to produce receipts for any money cashed and stolen or lost, If you get your passport stolen or lose it you get up to £200 towards the cost of replacing it. It covers you for personal accident ,you can't claim though if you are riding a motorcycle over 125cc unless the rider holds a valid licence for the bike. Be careful when riding one of these as loads of accidents occur whilst abroad , try and wear a helmet. If you have a flight delay you will get £10 back after the first 12 hours of delay. There are more things covered but you can read them on the website. Once I had decided on the insurance, I got out my credit card (ipoints of course)it takes you to a secure server where you enter your card details. I
t odesn't take long, straight after that I got an email saying thankyou for buying their insurance and to watch out for the deatails in the post. You can print the details off if you want, they send you confirmation with everything on that you have purchased. Within the next two days I had the info to hand, they send you a printed Policy Schedule with the insured names on and the costing. There is also a booklet saying the things you make a claim on. I will be using this quick and efficient service again.

            Disadvantages

I have been fortunate to be able to book a few holidays and breaks on line over the last two years in order to take advantage of cheap flights. The process is so easy. Finding accommodation is simple though my husband and I decided to know exactly what we were looking for in order to refine our search, i.e. country, hotel, apartment or villa. We recently took advantage of very cheap flights to Paris with Buzz for a three-night break and followed their site through for a modestly priced hotel. Decision made the transaction was completed in minutes with confirmation straight away. We needed Travel Insurance, so I set about searching out a good deal in keeping with our “bargain break” we had put together. My search brought me to Screentrade where I sussed out a few quotes. Direct Travel came up with by far the best deal and I settled for £13 premium for 4 days for us both. Confirmation was instant. It turned out to be £13 well spent. We went through the unfortunate experience of being robbed on the Paris Metro. Our Passports and travel documents were stolen, a new digital camera and insurance details. We spent half the day between the police and consulate, gathering information and paperwork. We missed our flight back and had to pay for another. Fortunately for us we had no money stolen and were able to finance emergency passports and our fare home. Our delay did not, thank goodness, involve an extra night’s stay. I contacted Direct Travel the next day. They were very helpful and our claim was dealt with admirably. The settlement cheque fell a little short of what we expected but arrived within 2 weeks of our claim and to our satisfaction. I would not hesitate to insure our travel with them again and recommend them to anyone.

Having booked my holiday to Tenerife in due to start next week, I decided to look on the internet for the best travel deal for the week. I had come across a few sites, and on Screentrade.co.uk, they recommended Direct Travel Insurance, and upon choosing them, I booked my insurance on line. The cost was £9.50 for 8 days insurance, including delayed baggage, and lost money, but excluding winter sports. The cover is good as well. I made the booking late on a Thursday night, and my documents were delivered by first class post 2 days later on the Saturday. A very speedy service in my opinion. I would certainly recommend this to others, however in all cases, it is better to shop round, as other insurers may well provide a better price or service, depending on your type of cover required, or destination.

                Advantages

                Disadvantages

Having booked my first independant holiday (ie myself as opposed to via a travel agent), I felt I should sort out travel insurance so I checked Directline's website and got a quote for two 25 year olds for 5 days in Amsterdam at £55. So I went to Ask Jeeves (www.Ask.co.uk) and asked for "Cheap travel insurance" which then took my details and compared several different companies. The cheapest quote was from Direct Travel Insurance. The quote for both my friend and I was a mere £13. The documentation arrived a couple of days later and the Insurance underwriters are CGU (big insurance company) so the cover is good. Thankfully I didn't need to use the cover, so I only wasted £13 instead of Directline's £55. So I suggest either you Ask Jeeves for a quote comparrison or just go straight to www.direct-travel.co.uk for a quote and see if anyone can beat it.
