I guess it is easy enough to buy at a travel agent if you are there... Things that always put me off are:- Anyone who says it's free is simultaneously selling me something else - I am not sure that my best attention would be on what is covered or not? Is that cover really suitable for me ? I have never met a travel agent who adequately explained the insurance they so happily sold me. I guess I'd pay for good, expert advice - but not all agents even seem to know much about the destinations they recommend to me. Although I can agree that they are not the cheapest, I enjoy booking at my local store and have not got time to be looking all over the place for a slightly cheaper policy. I had purchased the holiday and insurance through the shop at the same time. The deal was Free Basic Insurance, and I paid just an additional £20 or so for their best policy - Gold with nill excess. Last Summer, I was ill on holiday and had to stay on in my hotel overseas. My Thomson rep was brilliant and I was finally allowed to fly home after an additional 7 days. When I arrived home, I completed the claims forms and had a cheque on my doorstep within 10 days, which covered the costs ...

For our first holiday abroad for 5 years since we had got married, we took along our 18 month old son and booked a 2 week holiday to Rhodes. The holday was going great but on the 6th day I got some really bad news when we phoned home. I found out that my Gramdna had died. She had only lived at the back of me and I was very close to her. I had to get back for the funeral as it couldn't have waited until we got back. The rep sorted everything out and the insurance paid to get us early flights home, that all went smoothly.
