Advantages: Very fast insurance cover, to suit all of me needs.
Disadvantages: none as of yet.
I have spent the day trying to find adequate travel insurance for me and my husband, as we are flying late next week. This is something that we have always had in place but our policy had lapsed so we are no longer covered for our holiday next week.
Lucky we had checked this last night and in fact noticed that we were no longer covered, so my job today was to find travel insurance that will cover us for our holiday. I trawled the internet and spend hours trying to get immediate cover for us both, but in the end I decided to go to the post office this way it would all be sorted and in place straight away.
We have opted to get a basic cover through the post office, for the bargain price of 40.00 for the two of us. This cover will be valid until the 11th October 2008 so this is just short of four weeks cover for 20.00 per person.
WHAT WE ARE COVERED FOR
Cancellation and curtailment up to 5.000
Medical emergency and expenses up to 10.000.000 (outside the UK)
(Limited to 10.000 for UK holidays)
Personal accident up to 30.000
Personal Belongings up to 1.500 (delayed baggage up to 250.00)
Loss of passport up to 250.00
Personal money (including foreign currency) up to 500.00 (250.00 cash)
Missed Departure up to 1.000
Departure delays up to 300.00
in bound journey and 5.000 out bound journey.
Personal Liability up to 2.000.000
Hijack up to 1.000 (50.00 a day)
Mugging 50.00
Catastrophe cover up to 500.00
Homecare up to 250.00
Legal advice and expenses up to 25.000
This is the basic package that costs 20.00 per person, the only snag is there is an excess of 50.00 per person if we ever needed to claim.
OTHER BONUSES
If we had any travelling children then they would also be covered free of charge, any child is insured under any full paying parent or guardian. Unfortunately we are not taking any children this time but if we were than this would have been an even better deal.
If in the event we have to claim the post office promise to settle your claim within five days of you filing it, so this is a bigger bonus and save you waiting weeks to get you money and expenses back.
The post office can also customise your insurance so if you only needed two of three days cover they could do it for you, this would be ideal for weekend breaks away, although most wouldn't get insurance for the weekend but this is handy to know.
For as little as 7.00 the post office can tailor make you your travel insurance, but if you want more cover then you will need to pay that little bit more.
HOW TO GET YOUR COVER
This was really what attracted me to the insurance, I got it there and then over the counter at the post office. If you didn't have time to go to the post office you can also get cover by going online of over the phone.
Here are the three ways to get your cover.
1) Simply pop into your local post office branch to get immediate cover.
2) Call the post office Free on 0800 169 9999.
3) Get cover online at www.postoffice.co.uk
All of these methods are exceptionally quick and get you immediate cover.
HOW TO CLAIM
I have not had to claim, but I am assured if I do need to claim it will be quick and easy to do, all I need to do is contact the post office on 0845 602 5279 ( This will cost as it is an 0845 telephone number) to ask for the claim forms.
If there are any documents I have to support my claim I would also have to enclose these to ensure I get my payout within the five day period.
OTHER POST OFFICE TRAVEL BENIFITS
The post office can also supply you with,
CURRENCY EXCHANGE at the best possible rate, you may not be able to find a better exchange rate but it is worth trying.
PASSPORTS, this includes applications, renewals and name changing.
EHIC CARD European health insurance card, which intitles you to free and reduced medical care in the majority of Europe. I think this cost 11.00 per person for this card for a 5 year period. I would strongly advise you don't take this card from the post office, as I have been on the www.moneysavingexpert.com website and managed to get this free. Just go to the web site and under the travel section you will see a link that gives you this card for free.
MY OPINION
I feel that we have got a really good deal with this travel insurance, but this is before I have actually travelled so I will keep you posted on how it went.
I am amazed at how quick the post office were at getting me cover at such short notice, so I would highly recommend that you give them a go if you have never tried it.
All in all I am very pleased with the service I have had so far.
Summary: Very fast and reliable service from the post office.

- 26/10/08 The post office insurance is one of the better insurances around. Easy to obtain and an annual policy is even better value. |

- 18/09/08 Just a shame the Post Office adverts on TV are so awful - they put me off using the Post Office. Great review |
