Advantages: 5% discount with Tesco Clubcard, Earn clubpoints
Disadvantages: Better deals may be found elsewhere, Extra for winter and water sports
Today I asked for a quote for annual family travel insurance. This was worldwide including North America. We travel to Europe and Canada. The quote included a 5% discount because I am a Tesco Clubcard holder and is valid until the end of June. There is £35 excess on all benefits. They want £101.32 and the underwriter is UKI Insurers who are reputable. This is a good price when I look at similar quotes from my bank and major travel insurance companies. As it turns out I'm not going to take the insurance out as my current provider will give me better coverage on most items for the slightly less amount of £99, e.g.. £10million medical expenses as opposed to Tesco's £5million. The excess is £50 on all items, so it is all give and take. Also I can take part in all water sports and two skiing trips per year with not extra costs. I insure through Canadian Affair travel agents. But I had to write a review, to relate the crazy question Tescos asked me. I hope this was a genuine mistake by a overworked and tired operator and not an indication of their true customer service quality. I was asked if I intended to engage in any water sports. I said not unless they considered fishing from a boat in the lake a sport. The operator asked me to hold the line and came back a few moments later only to ask me whether or not the lake was freshwater or saltwater? Forgive me if I am wrong, but all lakes are freshwater, are they not?! Yeah yeah, SaltLake you might say. No. All in all I think it is worth a quote as the prices seem competitive, but it is still worth shopping around.

- 24/02/03 As regards the possible value of medical expenses cover - there is no appreciable difference between £5M or £10M cover.
Why? That is because the highest claims ever to date was barely 25% of the £5M maximum (or someone correct me if wrong). You'd probably be killed by "excess hospital careitus" if you ever approached a bill of £5M.
They quote high benefits, because you think you are getting more cover - when in reality the cover is far more influenced by the general terms and conditions and the even more relevant exclusions.
Insu rance is not just about how much they might pay, but under what cirumstances they might do so. |
