Advantages: Peace of mind
Disadvantages: None
But it ciould have been worse had we not taken out this great insurance. The insurance was purchased with our holiday from Thomas Cook, not sure which company they use to underwrite so tha't why it's in this section! Anyway, last year off we went on our jollies (me and my wife to be) to the lovely Island of Cyprus - reviewed elsewhere! We could only afford a weeks self catering, and the reson we bought the insurance was that my fiance's mother works for the company and twisted my arm! Thank goodness for (future) mothers in law! Anyway we wre having a great holiday in the resort of Ayia Napa (I'm not going to plug this one!) until one evening my lovely other half decided she felt ill. A few moments later she was flat on the floor in the restaurant after having fainted. The owners of the restaurant are family friends luckily, so they immediately summond a doctor whilst putting various concoctions down my girls neck in an effort to bring her round. A few moments later the ambulance turned up, lights flashing and sirens wailing, and by now a largish crowd had turned up to watch the proceedings! The doctor examined her and immediately made a signal to the attendant paramedic and my girl was lifted into the ambulance (really an estate car with stripes) and I was invited to join them for a ride to the local clinic. Well it was a very exciting ride, from Ayia Napa to Paralimni about 5 miles away, at midnight in the back of the old crate doing about 100 down the bumpiest roads you can imagine. Lights flasing and sirens blasting away, we arrived in double quick time. The clinic was excellent, private of course and Melanie (for she is my fiance) was immediatetly admitted and wired up to various monitors to see what was the problem. A humorous twist to this tale is that Melanies parents who were also at the restaurant followed along in a taxi. When they arrived they couldn't find
the patient or myself and so waited to see a doctor to find out what had happened. The doctor asked them to enter his private room and told them both to sit down sternly! They were obviously concerned about their daughter and looked at each other worriedly. The doctor then spooke - 'now, who is the patient?' LOL! Anyway to cut a long story short, Melanie had to stay in hospital under observation for the rest of the holiday about 3 days and the insurance paid for everything and dealt with all the paperwork etc. As soon as I notified them what had happened they spoke to the clinic direct and arranged everything. I would recommend everyone to get the best travel insurance policy they can afford, you never know what may happen. By the way they never found out why she fainted!? To cut a long story short

- 16/08/00 Sorry to hear that, in our case the insurance paid for everything up front, we only paid for taxis to the hospital when visiting and they paid that back within 2 weeks. |

- 15/08/00 We also took travel insurance out with Thomas Cook, but unfortunatly thought it was rubbish. We had to call the doctor out to our seven year old son, and found out we had to pay the medical fees ourselfs, and claim it back when we got home, well we have now been home for four weeks and still no sign of our cheque for the the fees we paid. |
