Advantages: Strims
Disadvantages: on a cord
Where to start with a review of a grass strimmer. Well first and foremost (and perhaps most importantly) this product is very good at strimming grass.
It comes up to my waist and is at a good height, so it is at a comfortable height to hold. It is possible to adjust the height on this however if when you get it the height is not quite right
There is a handle at the back to grip with your left hand and then a further handle on the top that I grip with my right. I like the handle on this as it feels sturdy and importantly safe. It also helps with balance and is comfortable enough to hold.
There is not much vibration through the strimmer when using it to your hands which is a plus. It has a 500 watt motor and is powered through the mains electric, as this strimmer plugs in and comes with a cord. A power breaker is essential here as no doubt it is no impossible to accidentally strim the cord (although I must stress I have not done this!)
One of the best features on this strimmer is that there is an auto feed on the line, so that when a bit of the line has been used, instead of having to everytime pull a bit of line out, the strimmer automatically does it for you. It is very convenient and saves a lot of time. It uses the 'Reflex Plus' system from Black and Decker. This strimmer has a cutting width of 30 centimetres.
This strimmer is also useful for doing edges, as it is possible to twist the guard at the bottom and rotate the head so that the strimmer does the edges of your lawn.
Another useful point is that it comes with some 'heavy duty' line which is very good for thicker and more difficult scrubs.
I have had the strimmer for two years and I had my first difficulty with it last month when the line holder broke - it cracked probably from repeated bangs against things and there a relittle metal eyelets that the line comes out of and they fell out. Homebase or B&Q did not do replacements, but I got one online from e-spares for £5.
Price wise, this cost me £60 and was very good value. For me it is essential as my lawnmower cannot get right to the edge and into the corners of my lawn.
Summary: has a wire will strim

- 18/06/09 My lawn is pocket hankerchief size, so a strimmer would probably do better than the lousey mower that hops rather than hovers. |
