Challenge Hedge Trimmer
Advantages: adequate for cutting new growth
Disadvantages: not brilliant on thick hedges, battery died
Challenge produce a range of budget garden tools, this particular ccordless hedge trimmer is available in Argos for £34.99 but I wouldn't really recommend it as a good long term buy.
I wanted a cordless hedge trimmer when I lived at my old house, I had a small privet hedge in the front and a larger mixed hedge in the back garden. I thought a cordless trimmer would be more convenient than trailing a cord around and I was also worried about cutting through the cord by accident.
I was reasonably happy with my hedge trimmer at first. After the initial charge of 24 hours the battery would charge in a few hours and give half an hour or so cutting time before it started to run slowly. This was enough time to either cut my front hedge or cut half of my back hedge, having to split the job up into sections because of the time the trimmer would run on a single charge was a bit inconvenient but to be honest my arms needed a rest after half an hour cutting time anyway.
The blades themselves are ok, the 41 cm length of the blade is adequate for most households but if you have a lot of hedges you will want a bigger blade to make the job easier and quicker. The 11mm gap between teeth means that the trimmer gobbled through new growth with ease but would often get stuck if I tried to cut the hedge back a lot and got into the thicker woody stems especially when the charge began to run down. You need to work out before you buy the trimmer if you simply need it to trim slightly and then it will be fine but if you need it for heavier cutting then save yourself some frustration and get a trimmer with a wider tooth size.
I found the trimmer was easy to use, just switch it on and start work although when I was cutting thicker branches they would clog the blades and I would need to stop and clear the blockages every few minutes. The battery makes this trimmer much heavier than a corded trimmer and this coupled with the vibrations from the blades makes using it fairly tiring on the arms.
The reason I have only given this trimmer two stars is the fact that the battery never lasted for very long. I did use the machine fairly heavily over two seasons but by the end the battery was increasingly holding less and less of a charge and I was getting less time before I needed to recharge again. The situation got so frustrating that I ended up going and buying a corded trimmer instead, for a similar price you can get a corded trimmer with a longer blade and larger tooth size which will make the job easier.
I cannot recommend that you buy the Challenge cordless hedge trimmer due to the fact mine lasted for so little time before the battery gave up, I did attempt to look into buying a new battery but did not find the info on where to purchase on easily so I just gave up. I expect the new battery would have been expensive anyway and I did not want to give Challenge more money. Maybe I was just unlucky but I want a hedge trimmer to last me for a long time and not less than two years.
Summary: For the same price buy a corded trimmer with far better specs
