Flymo Mini Trim
Advantages: easy to use, light-weight, one-handed
Disadvantages: can't cope with thicker growth
When we bought our hover-mower, this dinky trimmer was thrown in free as part of the package from Argos. We didn't really need a trimmer as we already had one, but we weren't going to say no!
It lives up to the Mini part of its name, weighing in at just over 2kg. It is constructed in plastic and feels well-made. Its handle is shaped for a comfortable grip and the trimmer can be used one-handed with ease. The Mini Trim has a small 250 watt electric engine to turn its single trimming line at high speed. It has a black semi-circle guard to the rear, to reduce bits flying back at the user. Having nothing at the front means you can get up close to edges in your garden, which is the main point of this trimmer. It's not very powerful but it can do the fiddly bits. Obviously you wouldn't want to come into contact with the line when it's going, so you have to be sure it's stopped moving before making any adjustments to the machine or picking up anything in your way, and look out for children & pets.
It has six metres of black electric cable, but doesn't come with any clips or fastenings on the machine to tidy it for storage. When I hang it up in the utility room, I also loop the cable around the wall-hook to keep it out of the way. It doesn't take up much room: at its broadest part (the guard) measuring approximately 11 inches (28cm) across, and from handle to base measuring about 31 inches (79cm).
To start it up, you simply press in the button at the handle and away it goes (as long as you've remembered to plug it in and switch the power on!) It makes a nice annoying buzzing noise as trimmers should, although nothing too loud or obnoxious.
As with most trimmers, you can tell by the pitch as well as cutting performance when the trimming line needs to be lengthened or adjusted. When the buzzing changes note, it's time to look at the line! This is extremely simple to do by hand, just squeezing the two buttons on the trimming unit in together and pulling out the required length of line. For me this is a major plus of this machine, as doing this for our other trimmer is a bit of a faff.
Replacing the reel when you run out entirely is a bit trickier, but once you've done it once or twice is not a problem. You can buy replacement line on its own or in a new spool from Flymo online or most good DIY stores or garden centres.
The air-vents at the back of the motor seem to attract fluff and grass, so need to be brushed off occasionally, but otherwise the Mini Trim needs very little maintenance.
In my heart of hearts I scorn the Flymo Mini Trim for its low power and single trimming line. But then I'm coming from a perspective of being used to professional brush-cutters with the harness and full-face shield, so this dinky machine is laughable in contrast! I have to admit that for home use, you don't need something as powerful as that, 'though.
Our other domestic-use trimmer, which we owned before we got this one, is still used more, because the Mini-Trim cannot cope with thicker weeds or lots of lush growth. The Mini Trim is really for finishing touches and fiddly bits of small gardens, and for that it is perfectly adequate. If your starting point is a fairly well-kept garden, then this machine will do nicely to keep on top of it.
This version of the Flymo Mini Trim isn't that easy to find (I think it may have been discontinued), but may be available second-hand or may be restocked new on-line, priced at around £28. (I wouldn't want to pay that much for it).
