Flymo Mini Trim
Advantages: Nice lightweight design that does exactly whats required
Disadvantages: Ongoing maintenance costs for replacement heads is expensive,
Having moved into our house in April we have finally got our own garden and of course along with a garden comes the maintenance. As a result we have made the essential purchases such as a Lawnmower, watering cans and spades, however rather than buy a set of shears to trim the border edges we opted for a Flymo Mini Trim Strimmer. I remember when I was younger how long shears took my parents to trim the lawn and I was looking for something a little quicker and more effective.
Finding The Right Strimmer
In fairness both of our lawns are reasonable small, however there are a number of flower boarders and it's these borders that made the need for a strimmer a higher priority item than it perhaps might otherwise have been. That said I didn't really feel like we needed a full size strimmer and that is when I stumbled upon the Flymo Mini Trim Strimmer. It was retailing for just under £15 on amazon and appeared to meet all of my requirements.
In The Box
The strimmer comes in a small box with the two halves of the strimmer ready to be assembled along with the guard and an instruction leaflet. The instruction leaflet isn't the clearest I've ever seen and although the assembly of the strimmer is relatively easy the instructions weren't really very clear or helpful if you weren't sure what you were doing. The strimmer guard slips over the top and needs to be clicked in place. I've read a couple of reviews where people have mentioned this flying off, however I've not had this problem.
Using The Strimmer
Having assembled the strimmer and cut the bulk of the lawn with the lawnmower I was ready to get cracking on the edges. The strimmer comes with a 6m lead and although I already mentioned my garden was small, it's not that small and I needed to get an extension lead to be able to trim the majority of my garden. As this was a mini strimmer however this didn't really surprise me and the length of the lead is something I can live with.
The first real surprise I had was that the strimmer didn't actually have a blade and was in fact a 1.5mm diameter line head. This was manually adjustable to the right length; however it does tend to shred and very occasionally break a little too easily. You will have to be very careful when using the strimmer if your line breaks as it would be very easy to lose the line into the head and it looks very difficult to retrieve.
Once it's plugged in and ready to go it's a simple case of pulling the lever on the handle and the strimmer starts up. To stop the strimmer again you simply have to let go of the trigger. I found that the strimmer did a reasonable job on the edges of our lawn and really served the purpose I have bought it for. It is very light weight and glides across the grass very well. It is quite loud when in use, however I feel this is a trait with all power tools and electrically driven gardening products.
The problem though is with the 1.5mm line, which seems to shred and break quite easily. The rest of the product feels and looks like it will last for a long time, however I think the line head will need replacing on almost a yearly basis, with a replacement costing around £4.99.
Am I Happy With It?
Well perhaps the most important aspect is that it does do what I need it to and leaves the edges of the grass by our borders looking neat. It doesn't miss anything and there are no stray blades of grass left standing. All in all it does do what I want it to, but the set up isn't as good as it can be and the instructions are quite needlessly complicated. I was also disappointed with the line head in place of a blade, however given the price of the strimmer, currently £14.39 on amazon, the old saying of getting what you pay for becomes rather apt.
It's a reasonable product that has done the job, however I would probably spend a little more next time round to buy a slightly more substantial machine. Given the costs of the replacement heads and the speed it appears to go through them it may be a budget item to buy, however the long term costs soon add to the cost. If like us though you do have a small garden this is a good starting point trimmer and certainly makes the garden more presentable, therefore I'd happily recommend it, but with only a 3 star recommendation.
Summary: A reasonable Garden product for the price
