      a decent model

Having worked in studio and club environments I have encountered numerous decks through my years. Sometimes it sets alarms bells ringing when I see cheaper brands! Numark is what I would deem a middle brand, just below Techincs and Gemini, but with this model, they are rivalling what the biggies are doing with some very impressive features.

The design work on the model is chic, minimal and uber stylish. The silver spec gives it a futuristic look and from an aesthetics point of view it looks the business. Sturdy yet also lightweight enough to be lugged from venue to venue, the machine will run from the mains, by attaching the plug to the reverse of the machine.

The turntable is foxed steadily and has pretty a good grip on the plating below. What I liked from a deejaying perspective was the control units. The ability to take the pitch to ten percent either way is suitable give, though one might have expected a little more. There are three different playing speeds though, with a 33, 45 and 78 rpm adjustment. The latter being an unusual yet quirky choice, as I have not met anyone who plays at this speed, but I guess it gives you the option of livening up a live set with some cool tricks.

The illuminated LCD makes it great for people like me who need that extra bit of help when you get two records with awkward time signatures. You can see the BPM displayed which will guide your work. I found that the arm was robust here too, but maybe a sturdier arm rest would have been better.

If you have the privilege to use these decks then you will find the speed good, the features impressive and the build pleasing. The price seems to vary these days at one hundred and fifty to two hundred pounds a deck, which makes it quite dear, but also a solid enough buy for what you are getting.

Being a great step forward from the Numark 1910's these decks are a must buy for all professional disc jockeys. Being a DJ myself I have to know about the latest tunes, but never to forget I have to be knowledgeable about equipment too!! Far ahead of the well known Technics SL-1210's, the Numark pro TT's are great. With 3 different speed options 33, 45 and 78rpm and a digital screen they are brilliant. Best used with Stanton needles and cartridges the proTT's really keep your records in tact. They are very reliable and well worth their price. As a proud owner of proTT's I also have a Numark DMX mixer. Being a great combination these decks and this mixer help me do whatever I want including producing my own music through my computer. The proTT's also are able to play your records forwards and backwards and are quite good for scratching (for all you Hip/Hop DJs.) So, if you are a fellow DJ and need new decks, don't waste your money on £1000 Vestax's. Instead buy Numark proTT's as they do the same job looking quite classy as well. So, find about £500 a buy a pair of Numark proTT's!!!! Also if anyone out there needs any advice on decks or mixers drop me a line!!

The Numark Por tt-1 A high performance deck that hs been specially design for the industry proffesinal in mind. This rugged deck is set apart from the rest by apperance, performance and features. It user a very high torque direct drive motor to meet the demands of a scratch turntableist. The surface of the unit is anodized champaigne gold with complementary smoked brown removerable lid. Its key features are, 33, 45, & 78 rpm speeds. Forwards and backwards motion. 10% pitch adjustment, fully adjustable tone arm, and a surface mounted backlit LCD display indicating modes with a rotating 12 segment circular display, indicating the spinning actions of the platter at all times. In use, put your 12" on the deck and move accross the tone arm. So far ok. Flick the switch behind the platter to change mode to 45 rpm. Now mix, the pitch fader is smoothe but like the 1210s has that annoying ball bearing at 0% Now as the platter spins the digital display is telling me how fast and that it s going fowards, (which is always useful!). The sound quality is good and overall hs a great feel about the mix. In the past manufacturers have tried to make things with extra gadgets cheaply and failed miserably. But Numark have got this one spot on. Hats off to them! Its an all round attractive deck, it looks good, has lots of fetures and the price is around £600 a pair! Not bad. I definately would recomend this product to someone wanting to upgrade their first pair of decks to these.

Obviously not all of us can afford fantastic Vestax decks costing £1000 a pair, so for those of us that can't, we need to find an alternative. This is by far the best alternative, and dare I say, better than Technic Sls. The things to judge a deck on are stabilisation, accuracy of pitch, platter power, and starting time and Numark wins in all thes categories by far, beating all decks in its price range, and even technics; coming extremely close to Vestax (which is twice the price!). Numarks start in no more than 1/2 second, stabilise before one revolution, pitch accuracy is excellent, and the starting power is at least 2kg/cm, only 0.1 less than Vestax! These decks are stylish, practical and a breath of fresh air, making DJing an absolute pleasure! They stand up against Vestax (Although it is like the Ferrari V Mercedes case!) and beat all other as far as I'm concerned and with the chrome option, youd be mad to pass it up!

If your deciding to buy a new pair of turntables to push your djing even further Technics aren't the only choice, believe it or not!!! Last June (1999) Numark released a brand new turntable called the pro TT1. It costs £600 for a pair and they are just as sturdy and reliable as Technics 1210s. They have 33, 45 and 78 speed, + and - 10 rather then Technics 8 and also have a reverse function. To top all this off there is an LCD display that shows the direction of the platter and the pitch at which it is running. They are well built, sturdy and a very serious alternative Technics. So don't rush out and buy Technics, try these babies out, you might just like them!!
