The Blatantly Boring Channel?
Member Name: mattconnect
Advantages: Reliable service
Disadvantages: Lack of up to date programmes
The BBC stands for British Broadcasting Corporation. It is a TV channel that shows many British TV shows, and a few select international shows. I only tune into the BBC occasionally because as a TV channel, it just doesn't do enough to inspire a range of people, and the range of shows and programmes are very limited.
The BBC are however one of the most reliable channels, and I've rarely had a problem with the reception.. whilst other channels sometimes filter out over heavy rain and storms.
Despite the lack of commercial adverts, the amount of times "Being Human" is advertised on BBC is just as annoying. There are SOME quite interesting commercial ads out at the moment, such as the Volvo one, and the fact that BBC's stand on no adverts is supposed to appeal backfires. However, the amount of annoying adverts we do miss from watching BBC is in some way good (Go Compare).
Most importantly, what shows are on BBC? Apart from the news, a string of property programmes and documentaries, you'll be pleased to know that they do have SOME good TV Shows. My personal favourites are Heroes (before it got bad), Nature Documentaries such as Planet Earth, Springwatch etc. They do a range of British Soaps such as Eastenders, but I'm really uninterested. Also added to the schedule are some comedy talk shows and so on. Overall, I'm not a great fan of the shows on BBC but I can see how some people can like them; it just doesn't appeal to me enough. Nonetheless, I would go to the BBC for their news and weather programmes! Once in a blue moon, they also show some decent films, but this is rare compared to other channels.
And comparing it to other channels we shall. In this day and age, the battle for consumerism and the brand is very important. Out of the thousands of channels that exist, they have to fight for viewers, and I really don't think BBC stands a chance in this battle. Compared to ITV and Channel 4, BBC is perhaps in the middle, with Channel 4 ruling the roost. What has BBC got to learn from Channel 4?
Channel 4 shows a range of up to date and modern programmes that are popular and are mostly US hits. It is a HIT for a reason, and they made the right move showing them. They have UK shows as well and have a very solid afternoon line-up (countdown, deal or no deal etc...) which the BBC lack. The variety that Channel 4 presents is much greater than BBC and I think that is where the BBC is empty and must improve on.
Overall, The BBC is a respectable TV channel that really lacks an up to date line up of shows, and perhaps have an image of old fashionedness. They are great with their news updates and the documentaries, but when it comes to hit dramas and entertainment shows, it just doesn't appeal to me as much as other channels. Nonetheless, I do tune in every so often, but no more than necessary. Background telly is reserved for Channel 4.
Summary: Not for everyone
