'BBC News 24', now known simply as 'BBC News', is a round-the-clock rolling news service broadcast in the UK. The station can be found on Freeview channel 80, Freesat channel 200, and Sky Digital Channel 503.
It began life in 1997 and since that time has become perhaps the BBC's most technologically advanced channel - with the option to watch a 'streaming' version of it on the BBC News website, or on a compatible mobile phone.
With the claim of being "Britain's most watched news channel", The station is a direct competitor to 'Sky News' which was first broadcast in 1989. In my opinion, the BBC service is better than Sky's offering, as it doesn't bombard the viewer with regular advert breaks, which provide the privately owned channel with a source of income. This can become quite frustrating after a while, and if I tune in to get the latest on a story, only to see an advert for tea or shampoo, then i'm obviously going to turn to another news service.
The presenters on the show represent a mix of new faces and seasoned pro's who have moved away from the news shows on the main channels. Some of the more famous names include; Huw Edwards, Gavin Esler and Matthew Amroliwala.
The station is cleanly presented with predominantly red and black graphics, whilst a digital clock and breaking news text bar runs across the bottom of the page at most times.
Overall, 'BBC News' is a great service. Tuning to the channel will ensure you're be kept up to date with whatever is happening around the world at that particular time. The presenters are on the ball, and the BBC provides a fairly unbiased look at world events.
