Advantages: some good stuff
Disadvantages: some rubbish!
BBC3 is a digital TV channel that has been running for a few years now. It's supposedly the BBC's outlet for new drama, talent, comedy and films.
The channel runs from 7pm to 4am, sharing its bandwidth with Cbeebies in the day. The channel is famed for showing almost exclusive British content.
The best thing about the channel is the way it showcases new comedy. Little Britain began on this channel, with the much more risqué series 1.
As the shows get more and more famous they are brought over to BBC 2 and eventually the mainstream BBC1. Another good thing about the channel is the way it works hand in hand with BBC1. For example, when Dr Who had finished on BBC1, you could turn right over to watch the documentary season about the show on BBC3. This extra option gave hardcore fans the chance to get more out of the show, almost in a DVD extras fashion, and this was a great programming decision.
With the focus being on British content, it really is hit or miss. Of course, it depends on your tastes, but I find a lot of British programming to be pathetic. Weak scripting and poor acting often makes a mockery of shows that, when compared to the US, are pathetic. To me, Torchwood is like this.
All in all, this is a great channel at its best, developing top shows that eventually make it to BBC1. At its worst, you end up watching TV shows that make you ashamed to be British. In conclusion, hit or miss.
Summary: up to you
