Advantages: Fun To Watch & Particiapte In & Some Real Bargains
Disadvantages: P & P and Phone Call Charges Can Be Prohibitive
Bid TV really is a lovely channel to watch for some light entertainment and to occasionally buy from.
They show falling price auctions of new products with every winning bidder paying the closing (lowest) price regardless of the price level at the time of their bid.
The channel used to be called bid up TV and it used to have mainly rising price auctions.
I will buy from them because an item is something that I really need or because the item looks way too cheap or just because I am a bit bored and fancy buying something.
You can watch the channel on Sky, Virgin Media, Freeview or Freesat. You can place orders either over the telephone or on line at www.bid.tv.
I like the fact that the presenters are virtually in constant audition mode for other television and presenting work and that this makes them try very, very hard. It's also nice to see that presenters with good ability but not always with traditional good looks are given a chance on Bid TV to show their presenting skills.
The only thing to really look out for is the £1.50 it costs to phone in your bid and the sometimes quite hefty postage & packing charges. The two of these tend to add up to around £9.50 so remember to factor this into the price you are willing to bid which doesn't include these charges.
I always bid on line meaning that I save the £1.50. You will still be charged the £1.50 if you bid by telephone even if your bid is not successful.
On line there are also "Web Auctions". These are auctions specific to the web that are not screened on the TV programme.
I like to browse through loads of items on the Bid TV web page, both for web and other auctions, and leave some "cheeky" low bids in for a few items that I fancy. It is surprising how many of these bids are successful and I have picked up some real bargains which even after P & P costs have been between 30 and 70% cheaper than the next best price I could find on price comparison web sites.
When you order by means of phone bidding someone from customer services calls you back, usually within an hour, to get your payment and delivery details. But if you want it more automated you just set up a pin number with customer services and after you have bid you input this number to activate "no call back". This means that they don't call you back but automatically bill and deliver to your registered card and address details.
If I have occasionally needed to return an item I have had no problems and customer service has been good.
Bid TV is a great channel and an enjoyable way of buying goods, particularly if using the on line facility.
Summary: Give It A Go, It's Great Fun

- 18/03/09 I shudder to think how many people are caught out by the £9.50 'extra charges' for the phonecall and P&P. Especially on the £1 items that probably cost them 20p a piece. Great review. |
