Advantages: The presenters are great., The auctions ARE interesting, It's utterly addictive
Disadvantages: The products are useless, The products are the same, every day, It's utterly addictive
OK, in general, I do not write positive things(unless for financial gain), I do not like shopping, and I do NOT like shopping channels. By definition, they are abject- cheesy, sleazy second hand car salesmen types trying desperately to sell you a chocolate fireguard or some other utterly useless item for £1million (plus post and packing). They are brilliantly summed up in a film called "Holy man", starring Eddie Murphy as a guru who stumbles into a sleazy, greedy shopping channel executive who uses his charisma to sell "grass-mats" and other associated nonsense. Shopping channels are, without doubt, poo. So it is with deep regret, and much shock, that I admit to liking this bloody channel. A lot. It is exactly the same as I expected it to be when I accidently stumbled over it looking for the Histroy channel. Cheesy, smooth talking Ken and Barbie dolls trying to sell you a load of obscure articles (semi-precious stone made globe for £300, anyone?), with a dramatic background music which goes up as the item is close to sale, and a constant zoom in shot of a guy or gal with a small wooden gavel being twirlled in their hand to encourage a bid. But I still like it... Why?Hmmm. I like the idea: an interactive auction where the viewers decide the price by bidding over the phone. Now I don't actually believe this is the case, but the idea is good and fresh, and it works well on TV. I like some of the presenters- one in particular who's name escapes me, but he seems to be the main guy(he does the adverts and stuff). I like listening to him desperately trying to sell you a Chinese floor rug or something, and he makes a decent fist of it. In short, the patter is entertaining. Futhermore, the auctions are quite quick, and as the end approaches and loads of people start bidding at what they think will be the minimum bid needed, it all gets rather frantic and interesting. Worryingly, this channel is totally addictiv
e. Whenever there is an half hour between shows I want to watch, I will switch over to 647 and watch Bid-Up.(and yes, they do say "dot") TV. All this despite the fact that I have never bought or even bid for anything, and never will. I do not need a chocolate fireguard (perhaps when the kid is born...) Yet I am hooked. So go on, watch it. It's on from 8am-1am, channel 647, all week. Just don't blame me when the inevitable happens...
